On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free. That delayed truth marked the beginning of Juneteenth, a celebration of liberation and the unshakable power of Black resilience.
Today on Juneteenth, we honor the joy while remembering the fight for justice and freedom is ongoing … and it requires all of us to stay in the fight.
As Maya Angelou reminds us: “None of us can be free until everybody is free.”
