LSMA is supporting our neighbors in fulfilling immediate essential needs. The needs in our community continue to grow, as do our efforts. 🏘️

In the past 5 months we raised $42.4k, but spent $66.8k. We distribute ~$2.5k/week in mutual aid! We need more monthly donors to sustain our offerings and meet growing needs. 💸

Weekly Supplemental Requests: LSMA offers biweekly grocery deliveries to our neighbors. Grocery bags consist of rescued food. LSMA purchases supplemental requested items (food, diapers, cleaning supplies, etc.) to fulfill family’s needs each week.

Funds to Families: LSMA supports families by reimbursing bills up to $75/month with receipt.
🛍️
Free Store: LSMA supports a free food and clothing store alongside other mutual aid groups on Thursdays 3-7pm & Saturdays 10-12:30pm. We buy goods in bulk for the free store and fulfill requests for patrons directly when we have the funds to do so.
🧾
Fiscal Sponsorship: LSMA pays fees associated with our platform to collect and distribute funds.

Logan Square Mutual Aid is conducting skills share sessions to help us raise funds to support our neighbors with groceries, daily essentials, and emergency aid.

A skills share is a class where a facilitator from the community teaches neighbors something new— like bike tune ups, indoor gardening, resume building, and more. Any and all skills are welcome! Skill shares are also an opportunity to build community, and meet and have fun with our neighbors.

Sign up to facilitate or help us recruit facilitators or help us find event space for future skills share sessions!

As supporters remember, an encampment sweep was executed on June 12 at the Milwaukee and Logan encampment. Community supporters assisted some residents in moving to a new location in Avondale. The location was suggested to them by Ald. Quezada as a long-term safe space for residents displaced by the construction in Logan Square. Residents moved June 11 and on July 24, the Illinois Department of Transportation posted a 7 days notice that the new site will be closed and swept by July 30.

Our organizations condemn this sweep and ask— WHY ARE OUR NEIGHBORS BEING DISPLACED TWO MONTHS IN A ROW? Why must unhoused people live in constant fear of sweeps and seizures of their belongings? If unhoused folks cannot live in our parks, cannot live under our bridges, cannot live on our streets— Where can they?

While residents have relocated ahead of the July 30 sweep date, we are deeply concerned that they were left with a week notice to do so. Residents deserve more care, consideration, and options for housing. We demand better of our elected officials and we will continue to support unhoused residents in our neighborhood and beyond.

Residents still need concrete answers from the city - Where can they go?

Community members from Logan Square and surrounding neighborhoods spoke with Ald. Quezada on the phone yesterday, June 3.

We discussed our desire to support residents. We are sharing the letter we sent to Ald. Quezada this morning, which serves as a summary of our demands based on conversations with encampment residents.
