Dear Family and Friends,

Amid this global pandemic healthcare crisis, we hope you are continuing to stay safe and healthy. While these times have brought great challenges, they have also brought us together as a community to elevate our communal responsibility and empathy. Coronavirus has had a devastating impact on many people and communities but has hit harder in marginalized groups that lack of education and resources. India struggles with lack of public health resources and also acute care resources to care for those who become ill with COVID-19. The Himalayan Health Center aims to assist these underserved populations. Cases of coronavirus have continued to increase exponentially in India with currently over 1.25 million cases since March, making India the third most impacted country in the world. Proper education and healthcare are essential during this time.

Our clinics are still open. The two clinics in Tibetan Children Villages have 850 and 1400 children who have been sent home from schools due to the viral outbreak. To manage and reduce the number of new cases, these schools are not expected to reopen anytime soon. Due to the lack of video-based communication, many children are left at home with no continuing education for the foreseeable future. Zanskar and Spiti have initiated a lockdown to incoming travel until the pandemic is brought under control through a reduction of cases or availability of approved vaccination. While our clinics are still running and providing care to local populations, we expect a long wait until our annual visits to these clinic sites will be possible.

Our clinics still need your help. We have started a drive to collect face masks and hand sanitizers to stock our clinic sites which will be distributed to children when they can return to their institutions and will also help protect our nursing staff. The Himalayan Health Center and the populations surrounding our clinic sites would greatly appreciate donations. Please consider donating masks and hand sanitizers to our Himalayan Health Center Foundation office in Chicago. Also, HHCF always appreciates monetary donations through our website which will go directly to purchasing personal protection supplies to stock our clinics for staff and patients.

Dear Friend,

We hope you all are staying safe and healthy during this unprecedented and challenging time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We want to stress the importance of taking care of yourself, remaining positive, and continuing to have hope for a promising future. Along these lines, we also want to show our gratitude for those healthcare professionals who are on the frontlines each day, caring for not only our local but also our global community.

During this time, the Himalayan Health Center Foundation (HHCF) continues to strive towards its goals. We have been committed for the past 24 years to provide quality health care in the Indo-Tibetan borderland regions. Donations to Himalayan Health Center support our five permanent clinic sites in Spiti, Manali, Zanskar, and two in Bir Tibetan settlements where we provide access to free medical and dental care and teach preventative practices. These clinics directly support Tibetan refugee children and native people. Our efforts have had a real impact on maintaining traditions and improving medical treatment in medically underserved populations.

Our affiliate organization, the Himalayan Health Exchange’s (HHE) last trip to Outer Western Himalayas in February helped to support our vision for global healthcare equality. HHE conducts trips with healthcare professionals and students to provide care to populations in remote areas of the Indian Himalayas. During this past trip, 2,292 patients were treated for various medical conditions including parasitic intestinal infections, TB, untreated congenital disorders, and many others. Below, we have included photos from previous expeditions of patients we have treated.

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis in India, many patients in these regions above mentioned will have even more limited access to care. In the past, the joint effort of HHC and HHE was successful in treating between 11,000 and 13,000 patients per year at our clinic sites. Your support will help HHC continue to maintain ongoing health care to the people in these regions. For the time being, HHE and HHC will continue to stand by based upon CDC recommendations for travel. In future newsletters, we will provide updates regarding the effects of the coronavirus on our region and our clinics.

We want to take a moment to thank you for your strength during this time. We are thinking of each one of you who has shown support in the past. We consider you all to be family and invite you to become apart of our vision for global healthcare equality.

Please feel free to check out our updated Instagram. and like our page to receive updates. We would love to hear from you.

With Peace,

Himalayan Health Center has developed a network of small clinics in the region, five of which are already established and fully operational. Two serve the remote regions of Ladakh and Spiti. The other three have been established within existing institutions in Manali and Dharamsala to provide children with preventative health care and health education. HHCF provides the medicines, supplies, equipment, and staffing needed to serve the thousands of rural and nomadic people who are in dire need of basic healthcare. Each year we provide health care services to more than 3,000 people. In 2020 we aspire to reach more patients with elevated health care services and increase our medical and administrative teams. Your contributions are desperately needed.

No matter the amount, your gift will make a difference for people in desperate need of aid.

Look out for updates and information regarding clinic sites and current organization events.

Himalayan Health Center (HHC) is a not for profit organization that exists to provide quality health care to the medically underserved in the rural Indo-Tibetan borderlands region of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh.
We share a clear vision for continuing excellence built around four key concepts: Tradition, Innovation, Adaptation, and Collaboration.

The Himalayan Health Center believes that regardless of race, religion, social status, or economic means, everyone should have access to healthcare.

Without Himalayan Health Center Clinic, this demographic of Tibetan refugees, nomads and local tribal people living in the high reaches of the Indian Himalayas will have to travel hundreds of kilometers to reach the nearest health center. With the help of our new network of health clinics, we will be able to provide life-saving care at no cost to these patients.

We value each individual and the community that they come from and we work to eliminate the overwhelming obstacle of accessible, essential healthcare.
