We are living history. We’re writing it as we go.

Everything we put our hearts and energy into, everything we subscribe to, everything we support - shapes our individual and more importantly, our collective history.

To kick off Black History Month, we’re honored to share alt_ was awarded the ART Grant from the Field and MacArthur Foundations which will provide our non-profit with a gracious $300,000 over the next 5 years. “The ART initiative is rooted in the belief that arts and culture organizations—including social service groups and those organizing for social change—play a vital role in Chicago’s identity, economy, and social fabric.”

We. Are. Blessed.

We are enabled to continue the work, to continue shaping our collective history. It’s in our hands, and we don’t take that lightly🙏🏾

We also take a moment to remember the history that Jon Veal etched into our foundation, into our communities and hearts; the roads he paved, his HISTORIC and powerful 30 year journey that led him to partnering with Jordan Campbell to initiate the dream that became alt_

Congrats to all Grantees and together, may we continue to write our own history.

Lastly, but not least, congrats to our very own Jordan Campbell .photo (pictured here 😀) who is leading the pack through his tremendous Power of Belief ♥️ // always making moves to ensure that in years, decades, centuries from now, history will look down on these moments with grace, dignity and love.

With all of our hearts combined, today we pay extra respect to our beloved Jon Veal. Today marks one year since his passing. His passing did not fare lightly on any that knew him. We’re reminded though, today and every day, of his force - how he showed up to every single thing he was a part of - how he brought importance, meaning, strength and his faith in God to all of his endeavors and relationships.

We honor him, and we honor God’s faithfulness, which was exhibited through Jon’s [MIGHTY] 30 years.

In continuing his legacy, this year we implemented the Jon Veal Fellowship under the leadership of his mother Karen Veal and Curry Greene. Fellows Nia, Micah, Danielle, Tom and Chris showed up to continue Jon’s legacy through research, practice, intention and implementation. The culmination of their time spent came in the form of a Project Stamp held at , to celebrate the first alt_ project; where Jon and Jordan offered free portraits to folks in their communities as to attribute beauty, ownership and value in areas often times associated as otherwise. [more on this soon]

We also encourage you to reflect on your own year and practices, we hope you’re moving in a direction that aligns your heart and soul, all while pushing for more & for better.

When you can, show up the Jon way - like you mean it :)

If you feel so inclined, please share with us some memories and/or photos of Jon via link above.

Much love,
alt_ team

With nearly 48000NFP in Chicago alone, it’s astonishing we are still facing pressing issues. It shows how great the gaps are and how necessary the work of orgs and companies such as Dion Chicago Dreams, ASAP, Territory, Your Passion First, Everyday Moms, Black Star, Sweet Water Foundation, terrain biennial, Design Museum, Trash People, Peace Runners, The Block, hood heroes, AABNA, Earth Remedies, Front Porch Art Center, Healing Academy, Grocery Run Club, we all live here Chicago, Art west, RAGE, EAC, LIVEJO, Firehouse, Mobil Makers, free street theatre, theatre Y, Railroad, Pilsen Food Pantry, Compound Yellow, TRACE, HARAMBEE COMMUNITY GARDEN, LCLC, Rebuilding Exchange, Build, Chicago Tool Library, Revolution Workshop, Earth Paint, F2F, Habajo are. These and many more amazing organizations are made up of everyday folks who display courage, care, hope and belief in the most generous ways for our beloved city.

During this time on Giving Tuesday we understand how difficult it can be to select which orgs to support. So we ask you to honor the hard work and dedication of local groups making our city greater through their service. Support them through monetary donations, spreading awareness, volunteering. Read up on the services they are providing and see how you can help amplify the voices of those organizations leading the charge, make this giving Tuesday not only an opportunity to give but an opportunity to show you care through your actions. The change that we wall want to see for this city to be a better place truly happens when every part plays a part that only that part can play.

If you feel so inclined, you may monetarily donate to alt_ at the link above. Otherwise, share with us your ideas at [email protected]

"HUMAN NATURE MURAL”

A project inspired by the legacy of Bill Walker's Wall of Respect. This visually stunning mural[in progress] is a testament to the talent and creativity of the artists involved, including Lila Galindo, Dorian Sylvain, Marcus Allyene, and Keishjuan Owens.

We extend our special thanks to Rich Alpech of We All Live Here Chicago and Nathan Miller for their invaluable contributions.

This project has been made possible through the generous funding provided by . The mural is located at 5906 W. Chicago Ave., precisely at T&C Fitness Club, and it plays a significant role in the redevelopment of one of Chicago's bustling avenues in the Austin Community.

Chicago Ave is soon to be recognized as the "Soul City Corridor," and this mural is a vivid culmination of the vibrant spirit and artistic creativity that define this community.

Your support and engagement with such initiatives are what make our mission to inspire and uplift communities a reality.

“ The crux of the problem is that the mainstream environmental movement has not sufficiently addressed the fact that social inequality and imbalances of social power are at the heart of environmental degradation, resource depletion, pollution, and the environmental crisis can simply not be solved effectively without social justice”

- Dr. Robert Bullard

This year at altspace we collaborated with our good friends and colleagues .studio to introduce Redemptive Plastics. This project has been collecting discarded plastic in the community and transforming it into benches and other functional artworks. With our volunteers we are still collecting, sorting, shredding, redeeming raw plastic into functional artwork for the community

At this time at 9:25, on Wednesday 21st, 2023 we honor our brother, cousin, colleague, nephew, and friend .veal .

“ he was exceptionally hard working infinitely fair-minded and most importantly, a fierce, fierce friend”.

And as the cofounder of [ alt_ ] we made sure to take out time to breathe and grieve. But faith without works is dead, and we are far from that. In the next few weeks we will be introducing our expansion and the good works we have and will continue to do for our community. Take this opportunity and every opportunity you can to play the part you are called to

we know that the cost of love is grief and we will continue to make space for the process.

Come and celebrate with us as we honor the artist, visionary and man of God who left a legacy of love, care and service impacting the world. Join us Sunday, February 18 at the Chicago Cultural Center from 12pm till 4pm as we honor the life of Jon Veal.

He lived and spoke about this scripture often.
1 Corinthins 12:
4-11 God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God’s Spirit. God’s various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful:
wise counsel
clear understanding
simple trust
healing the sick
miraculous acts
proclamation
distinguishing between spirits
tongues
interpretation of tongues.
All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when.
12-13 You can easily enough see how this kind of thing works by looking no further than your own body. Your body has many parts—limbs, organs, cells—but no matter how many parts you can name, you’re still one body. It’s exactly the same with Christ.
