CHICAGO SLIM® PRESENTS: Labor Day Party Bradley Center . . As part of our ongoing annual tradition, Preston Bradley Center and Peoples Church will be celebrating our hardworking neighbors and Uptown residents in transition housing on Labor Day (09/01/25). The 33rd annual Billy Hand Robinson Labor Day Picnic will include food & refreshment trucks, live music and lotsa' fun. Special guests include: Members of Chicago Blues All-Stars, Lynne Jordan & the Shivers, Chicago Slim and many other special guests. Bring your guitar, harmonica or horn and come sit in with the band. We'll be partying at Preston Bradley Center's parking lot (East Side of building) from 12pm to 3pm (doors open at 11:30am). ALL are welcome and admission is free. Preston Bradley Center is located at 941 West Lawrence avenue in beautiful Uptown Chicago. As per usual, always expect great music and fun times! We are honored to spotlight Dr. Walt Whitman II, a visionary leader and musical trailblazer with over four decades of experience in gospel music and choral excellence.

As the co-founder and CEO of Soul Children of Chicago, the nation’s oldest, internationally acclaimed, Grammy award-winning youth gospel choir, Dr. Walt has dedicated his life to mentoring young artists and fostering their artistic and personal growth.

Dr. Walt’s mission is to bridge genres by bringing gospel music into the classical experience while exposing audiences to a diverse musical repertoire.

His expertise in international choral music training has led to collaborations with global icons such as Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Oprah Winfrey, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

As a master conductor and choral clinician, Dr. Walt inspires and empowers ensembles of all ages and backgrounds. His passion lies in using music as a force for empowerment, excellence, and unity, making a lasting impact on the world.

We’re thrilled to introduce Lynne Jordan, a legendary performer and true Chicago treasure.

In a city filled with iconic blues and jazz divas, Lynne stands apart with her unique storytelling, raw humor, and powerful performances.

Dubbed “my favorite diva” by the late Chicago film critic Roger Ebert, Lynne has graced stages across the country, including sold-out performances of her acclaimed show, “A Musical Tribute to Nina Simone.”

Her extraordinary career includes collaborations with Tom Waits, Urge Overkill, Toronzo Cannon, and appearances alongside legends like Taj Mahal, Etta James, and Koko Taylor.

Lynne has also been featured in books such as Chicago Storytellers, From Page to Stage and 50 Women in Blues.
Her awards and accolades include the Outstanding Achievement in Music - Rhythm & Blues Award from the African American Arts Alliance of Chicago.

She’s performed around the globe with her band, The Shivers, including a life-changing show in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she played to a crowd of 250,000 in Freedom Square.

As a proud Uptown resident since 1985, Lynne is not only an incredible artist but also a dedicated advocate for her community.

We’re honored to remember Ron Ehemann, a trailblazer in advocacy and equality.

In 1978, Ron became one of Chicago’s first openly gay attorneys, championing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and representing many of the city’s bars and organizations.

As a co-founder of the Organization to Promote Equality Now (OPEN) Illinois’ first gay/lesbian political action party, Ron has made a lasting impact on the fight for justice and equality.

His noteworthy efforts include lobbying Governor James Thompson to secure an anti-discrimination directive for the Illinois Department of Personnel and advocating for amendments to Illinois’ Ethnic Intimidation Act to include protections for g**s and le****ns.

Beyond his legal achievements, Ron dedicated his life and career to raising awareness and funding for community organizations & charities . . Plus, he was an active Uptown resident and activist for over four decades.

Ron’s unwavering commitment to advocacy and community continues to inspire us every day . . RIP Ron, we miss you but your memory lives on at Preston Bradley Center!❤️
