Not Me We is a grassroots community group building power for Black, poor, and working class people in South Shore and adjacent neighborhoods. We believe Black people should have self-determination to decide what happens in our own lives and communities, so we work to build grassroots infrastructure that allows for collective and individual reclamation of resources and power in our community. We do housing justice and education justice organizing and monthly mutual aid.

WE WON!! Last week’s referendum win follows voters’ overwhelming support for renter, home owner, and property owner protections in South Shore and Woodlann.

This is the 3rd time in the last 2 years that voters have overwhelmingly voted in favor of a Obama Community Benefits Agreement.

After a two year process of talking about the needs, potential benefits, and opportunities for each organization, at the member and staff and board levels, and reckoning with the urgent need to be sharper and stronger and growing together, as we continue the escalating fight against displacement in Woodlawn, South Shore, Greater Grand Crossing, and adjacent neighborhoods.

This year we’ve been stacking our growth — adding members, a paid staff of 3, organizing 2 new tenant unions, launching a youth organizing program & maintaining three years of mutual aid at Parkside Elementary, and staying consistent in weekly canvassing to build people power for South Shore Housing Protections (CBA) and Bring Chicago Home. Now, it’s (been) time to launch an individual donors program.
