Tonight begins the Jewish holiday of Purim.
For those who may not be familiar, Purim commemorates the story of Queen Esther in the Bible approximately 2,500 years ago, in the Persian Empire (modern-day Iran), when the Jewish people were saved from annihilation.
It is a holiday of courage, faith, and survival — marked by joy, generosity, and taking care of one another.
Purim has four mitzvot (commandments). One of the central traditions is called Mishloach Manot — pronounced Mish-LOH-akh Mah-NOHT — which means sending gifts of food to friends to increase unity and friendship. It’s about community. It’s about showing up for each other.
This afternoon, my dear friend Elizabeth asked if we were sending aid to Israel. I told her we are. She said she wanted to send traditional Purim gifts. I shared that while we can’t send food right now, many people have chosen to donate paramedic medical bags as their “Mishloach Manot of the times.”
This morning alone, Project Aid & Rescue, Inc. purchased 30 paramedic trauma bags, which have already been distributed inside Israel to medics and first responders saving lives. We currently have a waiting list of nearly 200 more who have requested them. The Medical bags cost between $250 and $1,500 depending on their capacity.
The other 3 Purim mitzvot include:
• Hearing the Megillah (the story of Esther)
• Sharing a festive meal
• Giving gifts to those in need — called Matanot La’evyonim
While Mishloach Manot traditionally involves food, another core Purim obligation is caring for those in need. In Judaism, saving a life — pikuach nefesh — is among our highest values.
This year, donating paramedic medical bags to those actively saving lives in Israel fulfills that mitzvah in a powerful way. Instead of sending sweets, we are sending tools that protect and preserve life.
That is the spirit of Purim — standing together, protecting one another, and answering danger with action.
If Purim is about strengthening community and protecting life, this is how we do it.
Please join us with a gift donation.
Let your Purim gift help save a life.
Project Aid & Rescue delivers these life-saving medical bags directly into the hands of the paramedics and doctors on the front lines.
