July is shaping up to be an interesting month for ATU Local 241 members.

It’s ironic that the same month we receive our final contractual wage increase is also the month our union dues are set to increase. That raises an important question: Why should our dues be going up?

Union dues are supposed to provide value to the membership. They are intended to fund strong representation, effective grievance handling, contract enforcement, arbitration when necessary, member education, and the overall operation of a union that fights for its members. If dues are increasing, members have every right to ask what additional benefits, services, or protections they will be receiving in return.

I’m sharing a video from a member of our sister local, Local 308. Listen carefully as she describes their grievance process and how members are involved in it.

It raises another question: Has anyone in ATU Local 241 ever voted on a grievance proceeding to arbitration? Has the membership ever had a voice in determining whether a grievance should move forward to arbitration?

According to the ATU Local 241 bylaws, the grievance process is handled through the union’s established procedures, with grievances being investigated and processed by union representatives. However, many members may wonder how much input they actually have once a grievance is filed and whether there is sufficient transparency regarding decisions made along the way.

When you hear members from other locals describe their process, it makes you wonder: What exactly are our dues providing us? Are members receiving the level of representation, involvement, and accountability they should expect from a union they financially support?

As our dues increase this July, every member should take a moment to ask themselves:

Why are our dues going up?

What additional value are we receiving?

How are our dues being spent?

And are members getting the representation and voice they deserve?

These are fair questions, and every dues-paying member has the right to ask them.

This Saturday morning was time well spent with my colleague Eric Bascir. Our discussions were productive, thoughtful, and could very well lay the foundation for significant successes for our union. Eric’s knowledge of our union, its history, and its mission is second to none. His unwavering commitment to protecting and advancing the interests of our members is evident in every conversation. While he is often highly critical, it comes from a deep passion for making our union stronger, more effective, and better prepared to serve its membership. Today’s work reinforced the value of collaboration, experience, and a shared commitment to union solidarity.

TTENTION ATU LOCAL 241 MEMBERS

I recently received some information that I believe is important for every member to verify for themselves. It was brought to my attention that some members may not have a designated beneficiary on file for their pension benefits. Many of us assume that because we have a beneficiary listed through CTA, everything is covered. However, your CTA beneficiary designation may not automatically apply to your pension.

I encourage everyone to take a few minutes and confirm that you have a pension beneficiary properly designated and that the information is current. It's always better to verify now than leave your loved ones facing unnecessary complications later.

If you would like to check or update your pension beneficiary information, you can contact the pension office at:

Email: [email protected]: 13124419694

Please don't assume everything is set up correctly. Double-check your pension records, confirm your beneficiary information, and make any necessary updates. If something were to happen to you, you want to ensure that the benefits you worked hard to earn go to the people you intended to receive them.

Let's look out for ourselves, our families, and each other by making sure all our ducks are in a row.

There have been a lot of conversations and rumors lately regarding representation within ATU Local 241, and members deserve answers and transparency.

Many members are questioning why it appears that certain individuals are receiving stronger representation than others. Allegations have surfaced that non-241 members may be receiving more assistance than members in good standing, while some executive board members and stewards are allegedly being granted last-chance agreements to protect their jobs.

If these claims are true, that is unacceptable.

Union representation should be fair, equal, and consistent for ALL members — not based on position, politics, friendships, or favoritism. Every dues-paying member deserves proper representation, respect, and accountability from union leadership.

Members should not feel abandoned, ignored, or treated differently because of who they support or where they stand politically within the union. The membership deserves transparency and leadership that represents everyone equally.

It’s time for honest conversations and accountability.
