Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we uplift the history, the resilience, the wisdom, and the resistance of the First Nations and Indigenous peoples everywhere.
Chicago was built on ancestral land stolen from indigenous peoples, such as the Council of the Three Fires--comprised of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations--as well as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois Nations. We honor and stand in solidarity with our Native siblings in the face of the unbearable pain of colonialism and genocide. Thank you to our Native neighbors who continue to bless and protect the land around us and show us how to be better stewards of our environment and our community.
I also want to honor my TaĂno ancestors, who inhabited and protected our archipelago of Puerto Rico and many lands in the Caribbean, and who were decimated by Spanish colonization under the leadership of Christopher Columbus.
May we find our path to right the wrongs of history and bring justice, healing and restoration to all Indigenous Peoples everywhere.
