Last night, we had the joy and honor of celebrating Nan Silva and her extraordinary 26 years of leadership at Community Memorial Foundation.

For many in our Chicago philanthropic community, Nan is more than a respected colleague, she is a builder, a convener, and a fierce champion for equity. Her retirement from CMF marks the close of a remarkable chapter, but her influence across our region and within CLIP continues to shape us in lasting ways.

Nan has long been a steady and visionary presence in Chicago’s philanthropic landscape. As a Steering Committee of Chicago Latines in Philanthropy, she has helped nurture CLIP from an idea into a thriving community rooted in connection, leadership, and collective power. She believed deeply in the need for spaces where Latine professionals in philanthropy could gather authentically, build solidarity, and lead boldly, and she helped make that vision real.

Her leadership was also instrumental in launching the CLIP Colibrí Fellowship, where her commitment to cultivating emerging Latine leaders is evident. Nan understood that representation alone is not enough; we must invest in leadership pathways, mentorship, and meaningful opportunities to shape philanthropy from within. The Colibrí Fellowship reflects that belief, and her fingerprints are all over its spirit and intention.

At CMF, Nan led with humility, clarity, and compassion, always centering community voice and advancing health and racial equity. Within CLIP, she has brought that same grounding presence: thoughtful, strategic, generous with her wisdom, and unwavering in her commitment to justice. She models what it means to lead with both corazón and conviction.

As we celebrated her last night, we were reminded that Nan’s greatest legacy is not only in the initiatives she helped launch or the institutions she strengthened but in the leaders she has mentored, the spaces she has shaped, and the community she has helped build.

Nan, thank you for your vision, your mentorship, and your enduring belief in the power of Latine leadership in philanthropy. Your impact will continue to ripple through CLIP and across our region for years to come.

CLIP also looks forward to celebrating you soon!

Our philanthropic community is mourning the loss of a brilliant leader and dear friend, Michael Caga-anan Aguhar.

At CLIP, we were privileged to witness Michael’s unique ability to lead with deep wisdom and a gentle spirit. From his work at AFIRE to his leadership at Crossroads Fund, Michael lived his values of justice and community every single day.

He was a cornerstone of Chicago organizing, and his legacy remains a guiding light for all of us.
We invite you to read this heartfelt tribute by Crossroads Fund to learn more about his life and impact: https://crossroadsfund.org/michael-caga-anan-aguhar/

This week, we hosted our CLIP Colibri Social, and for many of our Colibri Fellows and coaches, it was the first time meeting in person.

What started as virtual connections, shared goals, and collaborative sessions turned into real conversations, laughter, and meaningful relationship-building face-to-face. There’s something powerful about finally shaking hands with the people you’ve been learning and growing alongside.

The energy in the room was a reminder of what makes CLIP Colibri special:
✨ A strong community
✨ Dedicated coaches
✨ Fellows committed to growth
✨ And a shared mission to support and elevate one another

Moments like these reinforce that while programs and curriculum matter, community is what truly drives impact.

Today we officially launched Cohort 1 of the CLIP Colibrí Fellowship, and we are feeling incredibly grateful and energized.

Our first session focused on building trust and psychological safety, grounding our cohort in confianza and respeto as the foundation for what’s ahead.

The Colibrí Fellowship is a new chapter for Chicago Latines in Philanthropy, and today affirmed why this work matters. Latine leaders are navigating complex institutions, expectations, and moments of change, and this fellowship is about creating space to pause, reflect, and lead with clarity and care.

Huge gratitude to our partners at Cultivate Coaching & Consulting (Jessi Pérez) for helping set the tone, and to our Colibrí Fellows and coaches for trusting the process and one another from day one.

This is just the beginning, and we are excited for the growth, connection, and collective leadership that will emerge from this community. 🌱🕊️

Here’s to this new chapter for CLIP and to our incredible Colibrí Fellows!

Sharing a critical new analysis from the Center for Neighborhood Knowledge (CNK) and the Unseen project, which reveals an unprecedented escalation in immigration enforcement targeting Latino communities during the first six months of the second Trump administration.

The report, "Latino ICE Arrests surge under Trump,"(linked below) details a significant and rapid shift in policy and enforcement tactics.

Key Findings from the Analysis:
1) Disproportionate Targeting: Latinos comprised 90% (nine out of ten) of all ICE arrests during the first six months of 2025.

2) Rapid Escalation: Arrests nearly doubled in the administration's first 100 days. Latino arrests averaged 558 per day, a sharp rise from 276 per day during the pre-Trump period (Jan. 1–19, 2025).

3) Shift in Strategy: The report identifies a 255% surge in community-based enforcement. This marks a significant departure from previous policies that focused on deporting incarcerated individuals from federal, state, and local facilities.

4) Geographic Focus: The most significant increases in enforcement actions were observed in Texas, Florida, California, Georgia, and Virginia.

Why This Matters (Key Messaging from the Authors):
The authors stress that this sharp increase in arrests within Latino communities is not linked to any evidence of corresponding higher crime levels.
This suggests that the operations are driven more by political and demographic targeting rather than a public safety focus on "the worst of the worst." This shift towards expansive and punitive enforcement, particularly community-based arrests, erodes public trust in law enforcement and ultimately jeopardizes public safety for all communities, not just immigrant enclaves.

The dataset for this analysis was provided by the UC Berkeley School of Law’s Deportation Data Project.

Last week, we were proud to be in the room for Chicago African Americans in Philanthropy’s annual benefit, an inspiring evening dedicated to Connecting Philanthropy & Community.

CLIP was honored to stand alongside so many committed leaders and changemakers, celebrating the power of philanthropy to strengthen and uplift Black communities in Chicago and beyond.

This year’s program featured the dynamic Roland S. Martin, renowned journalist and founder of the Black Star Network, who reminded us of the urgency of our work in a time of political uncertainty and rising inequality. His words were a powerful call to action to deepen our collective resolve and stand in solidarity with communities we serve.

Congratulations to the entire CAAIP team and the “Connecting Philanthropy and Community” committee for creating such a meaningful evening. We’re grateful for your leadership and proud to support your vision.
