Illinois ranks No. 3 on the list of wrongful convictions, with 225 exonerations in the past nearly 30 years. That’s according to the National Registry of Exonerations, which counted 20 men and one woman in Illinois who were exonerated in 2017 from the crimes of murder, sexual assault, drug possession and robbery. Illinois has a lot of wrongful convictions. Chicago’s got a lot of wrongful convictions.

Illinois has the one of the highest numbers of wrongful convictions and the evidence of that are the most active post-conviction litigation bars and how many Illinois has. The Exoneration Project, another organization called The Center on Wrongful Convictions, there’s another organization called the Illinois Innocence Project, that’s downstate and many others in Illinois. That’s pretty rare for a state to have this many groups working on wrongful arrests and convictions.

Sergeant Ronald Watts scandal is one of the most viewed cases, this was a sergeant in the Chicago Police Department who ran a housing unit at the Ida B. Wells Homes and was basically facilitating his own drug trade from 2000 to about 2012 until he was federally indicted. It involved maybe 15 officers who worked under him, and had something like 30 convictions overturned in the last couple of years based on that, and that’s just gonna be the beginning of what is to come in Illinois. We need to make bigger changes in wrongful convictions and arrests because years are taken away from the people who are wrongfully convicted with an average of waiting a minimum of 10 years before they are exonerated and their cases are over turned and that is just from when they finally get the proper counsel to over turn their cases.

Please help spread awareness by sharing this article and help the wrongfully convicted by doing so! Click the link on the home page of the Jonas Haro Foundation for Wrongful Arrests to sign his petition to exonerate his name for his wrongful conviction. Thank You All For Your Support!!

More men have been exonerated in the ongoing Ronald Watts corruption scandal. We spoke with a wrongful-convictions attorney who’s working the case. By Bashirah Mack Last week, 18 men who were wrongfully convicted of crimes linked to corrupt former Chicago police Sgt. Ronald Watts had their cases

In the last 30 years, the National Registry of Exonerations shows more than 2,700 people were exonerated for crimes they didn’t commit adding up to nearly 25,000 years of life lost. When you compare that to how long the average person lives that’s about 320 lifetimes lost. WE NEED TO MAKE CHANGES TO A BROKEN SYSTEM FAILING TOO MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE!!!!!

PSA long but worth it to read 😉🤗
I know people and even Jonas might not like everything I've said or agree with it, but I refuse to just sit here and do nothing like so many people have, instead I will fight to bring you home and not give up! Everyone knows you didn't do anything wrong and they did nothing about it, only a few people have tried to help. I couldn't live with myself, as your friend that claims to care about you if I did nothing to help you or was the cause of you being punished for something you didn't do. We've known each other for a long time and anybody that knows you knows how loyal and dependable you are, no matter what you were always there for anyone that needed you. You went out of your way for people all the time. Now you have a son growing up without his father, and it breaks my heart that your freedom was robbed from you, stealing a father away from his son, everyone knows how much you love him and so does he. I've looked into your case and yes Joey's dad, Roger Montoro, covered up what Joey did to keep him out of jail only to put you there instead, only caring about his reputation and career, it's no shock to anyone we all know his dad used his badge to get Joey out of trouble and save his career countless times. Joey can't get in trouble for anything now he won't go to jail and that's not my intention, his dad is retired and also can't damage his career, so now is the time for everyone to help Jonas period bc there is no excuse not to. All I'm asking is for signatures on a campaign to help get Jonas home to his son, family, and friends. I am only 1 person and I will do all I can to bring Jonas home, but greater things happen in larger numbers. Nothing gets done when you are sitting down, if you want something to happen you have to take a stand for what you believe in and fight for it. So please take a stand with me and help fight for Jonas to get his life back and clear his name. I'm sick of corruption and bc of 2 corrupt CPD violent crimes detectives Jonas lost his freedom to a crime he did not commit. How many other people lost their freedom to a crime they didn't commit bc of the same 2 CPD detectives? Police officers swear an oath to uphold and protect the law, but these 2 officers broke several laws and should have been penalized for it not commended. Ballistics did not match up to what these CPD detectives were swearing to be true in their statements and on the stand in court while knowingly lying under oath. One of the two CPD detectives claimed he was shot in his hand yet ballistics show the direction the bullets were fired landed in the roof of a garage at 7014 w 16th street and the injured officer was no where near the directing of the bullets, and was never even shot all together. For a bullet to hit the detectives hand and nothing else, the gun would have to be fired by an expert shooter, for example a sharp shooter in the military, sounds like the officers knew what to do and what to say, they are detectives after all, solving crimes is their job making it easier for them to stage a crime too. Once the detectives decided to pursue, chase, and fire their service weapons at 2 civilians running away from them, while off duty and heavily intoxicated over a girl, they broke several laws and never answered for it. Remember this all happened over a girl in a bar that complained to these 2 off duty detectives, whom were heavily drinking, that Joey Montoro was dancing to close to her and she was "uncomfortable" so they started an argument and it led to them firing their service weapons FIRST escalating a situation that could have been resolved peacefully by Roger Montoro whom was a sergeant at the Berwyn Police Station in the town that the crime took place, he would've gotten his son, Joey Montoro, to stop and go home and none of this would have happened if they did the right thing and dialed 911 instead of taking the law into their own hands. The girl involved was never IDENTIFIED or QUESTIONED which makes no sense to anyone with a brain. Police officials are PROHIBITED from concealing and carrying their service weapons in Illinois and they must have a valid conceal and carry licence to conceal and carry just like civilians, just bc they have badges doesn't mean they automatically have a conceal and carry licence. Everyone is PROHIBITED to conceal and carry when INTOXICATED, in fact, if a police official or any civilian in general were intoxicated and decided to fire their weapon with a valid conceal and carry licence they are putting innocent peoples lives in danger by taking the law into their own hands by breaking it themselves. If the 2 off duty CPD detectives felt threatened, as they claimed in statements, then they should've dialed 911 to report the threat or crime and did not. The 2 CPD detectives never identified themselves as police officials before engaging into a gun fight with civilians, which also was breaking the law. These CPD detectives lied and used their badges to ruin an innocent man's life to save their careers by falsifying a police report while breaking conceal and carry laws, lying under oath, and targeting Jonas bc of his race and environmental background, thinking nobody cared enough about him to find out the truth and help him, well they were wrong bc I know a lot of us care and will fight for him. Nobody can be recharged or found guilty, not even Joey and I'm not trying to make that happen, I'm trying to bring Jonas home and bring light to the police corruption that stole Jonas' life from him, as he still is being punished in prison for a crime he DID NOT COMMIT. Stop letting police corruption and lies brainwash and scare you, instead take a stand with me and fight for an innocent man and a cause that is worth your fight! Ballistics and scientific evidence prove one thing while rumors are being believed as truth when it's been nothing but lies for the past 16 years. Now is the time to show Jonas how much we care about him and want him home, so let's do something about it. Please CLICK, SIGN, and SHARE the petition below to help bring Jonas home! Thank you to everyone who helps and supports bringing home an innocent man, your loved one, he appreciates you all, every signature counts! 💖💞💖💞💖💞💖💞💖

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to you from the Jonas Haro Foundation for Wrongful Arrests, in hopes of getting Jonas Haro's story out to the public to clear his name for a crime he did not commit. Jonas was targeted and framed at the hand of corrupt police officers. The act of the crime took place at a bar in Berwyn, Illinois involving 2 Intoxicated Armed Off-Duty Chicago Police Detectives causing a fight. Jonas was at home with his family during the time of the crime and no where near the Berwyn bar. The police pinned the crime on Jonas because he was an easy target because he comes from a minority race and was not financially established meaning he did not come from money. Jonas has maintained and fought for his innocence for over 16 years in search of getting his name cleared and praying for the help of the media to do so.

There is overwhelming evidence that proves his innocence and it should not be ignored as it has in the past. Jonas has suffered in prison for far too long and while incarcerated he has been diagnosed with keratoconus which occurs when your cornea, the clear dome-shaped front surface of your eye, thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape which causes blurred vision and may cause sensitivity to light and glare. Jonas' condition is progressive and he needs a cornea transplant. A new treatment called corneal collagen cross-linking may help to slow or stop keratoconus from progressing, possibly preventing the need for a future cornea transplant, but it isn't available in prison and neither is the transplant.

Jonas has missed out during milestones that were reached in his son's life because he was incarcerated when his son was an infant. From Jonas' son saying his first words, to taking his first steps he longed to be there for his son but couldn't. When his son threw his first ball Jonas was unable to catch it because he was being punished for a crime that was impossible for him to even commit. Kindergarten Graduation along with 8th Grade Graduation came and passed along with every birthday as his son needed his father to be there.

As the years passed, Jonas along with many people, including his sister and mother have worked hard to clear his name and bring him home from prison. Jonas' mother has spent the past 16 years searching and praying for help to get her son's story out to help free him from the shackles of a corrupt system. She has had countless sleepless nights and overwhelming amounts of stress because her son is incarcerated and being punished away from his family for a crime he did not commit. Sadly in November 2020, Jonas' mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer and she desperately needs her son home by her side. Jonas could help with doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, helping around the house, or anything she may need while she battles cancer for her life back. Her biggest fear is her son will lose his mother while incarcerated for a crime he wasn't even part of, which she is certain was the case because he was home sleeping in his bed when the crime was committed as she testified so in court.

Imagine losing your mother while you are in prison for a crime you did not commit, unable to pay your respects at her funeral services. So many families suffer while a loved one is away from them because they are incarcerated. Can you picture what it feels like to be punished when you are an innocent person? Jonas has suffered enough and needs all the help he can get to clear his name.

ILLINOIS holds the HIGHEST number of people INCARCERATED for crimes they DID NOT COMMIT and usually at the HANDS OF CORRUPTION, as well as being a VICTIM to a FAILED SYSTEM. As we all know ILLINOIS also is the MOST CORRUPT STATE in the COUNTRY! CHICAGO is placed as the MOST CORRUPT CITY in the COUNTRY too! The COOK COUNTY DISTRICT is the most corrupt, ranking with the highest number of WRONGFUL ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS, ruining people's lives FOREVER!

Remember it isn't only the people incarcerated that suffer from their time in prison, loved ones cry and pray to keep them safe as they develop mental health issues from the trauma that comes with loving a person whom is incarcerated. It feels as if you are mourning a death of a loved one with no closure because they aren't really dead they are in prison. Empty holidays come and go as the years pass them by. The amount of tears shed could fill an ocean of oceans, as we cry and pray to bring our loved ones home.

Minority races and the economically challenged are being targeted in Illinois right now as you read this letter, for crimes they did not commit. People holding a reckless past and tarnished record are targets for future crimes. Everyone makes mistakes but it's obvious that Illinois holds people's past records against them as they continue to collect tax dollars for every prisoner so they do not care if you are innocent and will presume you guilty. Illinois and Chicago along with the Cook County District make people very angry because think they are above the law and a lot of people over it. It is time we make changes and stop ignoring the corruption!

As I ask for your help to get Jonas Haro's story out, please keep in mind all the people affected by a loved ones incarceration and the hardship it brings to them. Worrying about a loved one and the stress it causes will kill you slowly and can become traumatizing, especially to children. It can be tormenting to their daily lives and the damage throughout the years can become irreversible.

Jonas has maintained his innocence and deserves a chance to get his story out and to be heard. Helping one man can change the lives of so many people suffering for someone else's mistake. Please help bring us steps closer to clearing an innocent man's name! Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you to start something great!

Sincerely,
