**COLD WATER DOESN’T CARE
HOW STRONG A SWIMMER YOU ARE.**

Is it possible to drown without any water in your lungs?

Yes. And every boater should understand how it happens.

When water hits the vocal cords, the body slams them shut - a reflex called laryngospasm. Sometimes it never reopens. The airway seals. No water enters the lungs, and no air does either. The person asphyxiates without swallowing a drop.

Cold water adds two more ways this plays out:

Cold shock - the first 60 seconds. Involuntary gasping and a racing heart. That first gasp is where people take in water, or where a vulnerable heart simply stops.

Hypothermia - the longer arc. Core temperature falls, coordination fails, and the heart starts throwing fatal rhythms. Cold water can kill an hour after the person seemed "fine in the water."

And the one most people have never heard of: post-rescue collapse. Cold blood rushing back to a chilled core can stop the heart during recovery. It's why rescuers pull people from cold water horizontally and handle them gently.

Know the 1-10-1 rule:
1 minute to get your breathing under control.
10 minutes of meaningful movement before grip and coordination fail.
1 hour before hypothermia takes most people down.

Wear your PFD. Cold water doesn't care how strong a swimmer you are.

Last night our Chief Development Officer, Paola Ferrario, wore a second hat - and wore it well.

Outside her work with No Salt Sailing, Paola is part of the Floating Museum (Floating Museum), a Chicago arts collective exploring the relationships between art, community, architecture, and public institutions. She invited us to An Evening at Practice Space on the South Side, and it was a privilege to watch her in her element: community builder, strategist, and a woman who turns ideas into sustainable change.
