The University of Alabama Desegregated
On June 11, 1963, two African American students, Vivian Malone and James A. Hood, registered at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Despite the racist antics of Governor George Wallace.
Flanked by state troopers, Wallace had blocked the door of the enrollment office, vowing, “Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever!”
However, the U.S. Supreme Court had declared segregation unconstitutional in 1954’s Brown v. Board of Education, leaving President John F. Kennedy with no choice but to federalize Alabama National Guard troops and force Wallace to halt his blockade and submit to the high court's ruling, ending segregation at the university.
