Youth in Foster Care: Transition Planning
October 21, 2026
12:00 PM

As youth with disabilities approach age 16, the IEP process begins to shift toward preparing for life after high school, with the youth’s strengths, preferences, interests, and goals at the center of transition planning. This training explores transition planning for students in foster care preparing for life after high school. Foster families and the professionals who advise them will learn about IEP transition requirements, post-secondary goals, and best practices to help students develop the skills needed for education, employment, and independent living.

School choice can create new educational opportunities, but families should understand the services, protections, and responsibilities associated with each option before making a decision. Review the details of the specific school choice program, consult your child’s IEP or Section 504 team, and ask questions to ensure your child’s educational needs remain a priority.
