In June, 1993, six Cheyenne Model Railroad enthusiasts came together to form Sherman Hill Model Railroad Club, Inc. During the following years, members began building a modular layout to take to shows around the region and display in the club's annual Cheyenne show each May. Much of the work on these modules was completed in the UP steam shop in Cheyenne, WY., thanks to some club members' strong t
ie to UP and its history. This modular layout, the Cheyenne and Northwestern, continues to grow and is a highly sought after display from show organizers throughout the region. During the growth of the club, many SHMRRC members became involved with the Greeley Freight Station Museum, founded and developed by David Trussell, publisher of the Greeley Tribune at that time. Mr. Trussell and a few close friends had build a 64 X 64 foot modular layout, the Denver, Greeley and Tahoe, that, through the years, had won over 50 awards at shows throughout the country. Trussell stored this layout in a trailer in the early 2000s and turned his attention to the Greeley Freight Station Museum. In 2013, this layout was offered to SHMRRC. Club members jumped at the opportunity, with the idea of finding a home for a permanent display and restoring this layout to full operation. The opportunity came in 2015 when the SHMRRC was offered a spot in Frontier Mall in Cheyenne. In August, 2015, a few dedicated club members unloaded the layout from the trailers, set it up in the storefront., converted the operation from DC to DCC, renamed it as the Cheyenne and Green River and had it operational in 3 weeks time. The club presence in Frontier Mall opened to the public on Labor Day weekend 2015. Due to space limitations, the layout had to be downsized slightly from the original. Today, it sits at 53 x 31 feet and contains approx 3.5 miles of double mainline, along with numerous sidings and yards. Both layouts continue to evolve. Admission is free. Donations are accepted.
