A massive study of half a million men and women in China found that those regularly eating spicy foods had an associated 14 percent reduction in total mortality, meaning the risk of premature death. That could translate into about an extra year onto your lifespan, if it is cause-and-effect. A lot of healthy green tea is drunk in China, though. Would we see the same results in a country like the United States? We did. A similar benefit of a 13 percent reduction in premature death.

One of the mechanisms by which spicy food may help with longevity is hacking our brains by making foods taste saltier. Anything that reduces sodium intake could improve longevity, as excess salt consumption is a deadly dietary risk factor, killing millions of people every year. Not only could you use spice to replace salt, but the spicy compound actually makes food taste saltier than it actually is. Sprinkling on some red pepper powder can increase your sensitivity to the taste of salt, so you can get that same salty taste with less salt. Researchers were able to pick up differences in people’s secondary taste cortex, the part of our brain associated with pleasure signaling to salty foods, when they were in a PET scanner.

Use hot peppers to hack your brain for your health! But, just because all studies to date on spicy food and mortality suggest hot peppers may help you live longer, that doesn’t mean you should go out and eat a ghost pepper.

My favorite way of preparing split peas is to make a warm and comforting soup. (It’s a classic for a reason.) I also throw split peas in the rice cooker, the way I prepare lentils. The following is yet another way to add these nutritious little gems into your daily diet. Remember: In my ideal world, we’re all enjoying legumes (beans, chickpeas, split peas, or lentils) with every meal. If you prefer, use any type of lentil instead of the yellow split peas in this recipe.

Serve this gorgeous dal over cooked whole grains. Dal, by the way, is the Indian word for “split pea,” or a dish made with them. Full recipe at https://bit.ly/3zIpQP4.

Approximately 5 percent of the spice turmeric is an active compound called curcumin, and about 5 percent of black pepper by weight is a compound called piperine. Curcumin is responsible for the yellow color of turmeric and piperine for the pepper’s pungent flavor of pepper. It’s also a potent inhibitor of drug metabolism. One of the ways our liver gets rid of foreign substances is by making them water-soluble so they can be excreted more easily, but this black pepper molecule inhibits that process.

It doesn’t take much either. If you give people a bunch of turmeric curcumin, within an hour, you can see a little bump in the level in their bloodstream. The reason we don’t see more is that our liver is actively trying to get rid of it. But what if you suppress that process by taking just a quarter teaspoon’s worth of black pepper? With the same amount of curcumin consumed, the bioavailability shoots up by nearly 2,000 percent. (See the graph at 2:00 in https://bit.ly/3PwktLJ.) Even just a little pinch of pepper—1/20th of a teaspoon—can significantly boost levels.

Another way to boost the absorption of curcumin is to consume it as the whole food (fresh or dried turmeric root) or as powdered turmeric. The natural oils in turmeric root and turmeric powder can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin seven- to eight-fold. Additionally, when eaten with a source of fat, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system, thereby in part partially bypassing the liver.

Visiting a forest can induce a significant increase in both the number and activity of natural killer cells, one of the ways our body fights off cancer.

Researchers found a significant boost in natural killer cell activity in men and women after they spent a weekend walking in the woods. The same results were even seen after just a one-day trip to the woods, and the natural killer cell activity was still boosted a week later.

In a study comparing walking in a city versus a forest, the participants walking in the woods experienced an 80% boost in natural killer cell activity, compared to only a 10% bump for the city walkers. Moreover, researchers found that the increased natural killer cell activity lasted up to 30 days after the stroll in the forest.
