What does posture have to do with singing? More than most young people have ever been taught.

Your diaphragm sits just above your belly button. That is your center of gravity. The moment you shift your weight or over-relax your knees you throw yourself off balance and away from that center.

And when the instrument is out of alignment, everything built on top of it becomes harder.

In this clip I am working with a vocal coaching client on one of the most overlooked fundamentals of performance. A small shift in the knees. A subtle throw of the weight. Most people do not even notice they are doing it. But the body does.

Your body is the instrument. And learning to use it intentionally is one of the most empowering things a young person can discover.

I have had 10 brain surgeries.

And when I tell young people that they look at me exactly the way you are probably looking at me right now.

Like it is sad.

It is not sad.

I am a survivor. I have overcome brain surgery to become a happy, healthy, empowered person with a mission, a vision, and a purpose.

And that is the thing I most want every young person I work with to understand.

The hard thing that happened to you is not the end of your story. It is the raw material for who you are becoming. Cognitive reframing is the practice of choosing what it means instead of letting it choose for you.

That is one of the core principles in my upcoming book Stress Management Sounds Like This: A Creative Blueprint for Staying Regulated and Resilient Under Pressure.

And it works the same way for a fifteen year old as it does for a forty year old.

Comment THINKING and I will send you a sneak peek at the first three chapters.

Some relationships feel different from the moment they walk in the door.

Dr Rita D Lewis and I have collaborated across many projects over the years. But when she came into my personal studio space for this week's episode of REAL TALK she said something that I think captures why this work matters.
Nothing fits like this project.

That is what happens when the right people are in the right space having the right conversation.

That is what I try to create for every young person I work with too. A space that fits. A conversation that matters. A place where they feel safe enough to say the thing they have been carrying.

: this post contains references to homelessness, su***de, and grief. If you or someone you know is struggling, please call or text 988.

When I was nineteen I had been unhoused for the better part of a year. I had lost people to su***de. And I drove to my ex-boyfriend's funeral and made a vow.

I would do anything I could with music to help other young people realize they do not have to give up.

That is why YES Youth Coaching exists. That is the whole origin story.

Because I was that young person. The one who needed someone to show up with a song and a safe space and say you matter and you do not have to give up.

If your teenager needs that person right now, I would love to be them.

You can leave it all behind. Live your life with no regrets. If it's meant to be it'll find you. When you lead with your best.

These lyrics were co-written with Young Leaders from Cambodia and Laos at AUT in New Zealand. And they are now the centrepiece of the official music video for Trust the Process, dropping September 5.

Shot at Magpie Cage Recording Studio in Baltimore by LJR Creative.

This is Empowerment Through Songwriting in action. Young people finding the words for what they want to say. Those words becoming a song. That song becoming a music video. And that music video reaching young people around the world who need to hear it.

Comment ACCESS and I will send you a sneak peek before the video drops.

If you missed this week's episode of REAL TALK with Emma G and Dinah, Emma sat down with Dr Rita D Lewis.

And she said something I think every young person needs to hear.

She has pivoted in her career more times than most people can count. But it always comes back to the same thing.

Being a voice. Being a storyteller.

And sometimes tapping into her authentic self is too triggering. So she taps into a version of herself she knows she can access. The professional version. The advocate version. The one who knows how to show up when it matters most.

That is not weakness. That is self-awareness. And it is one of the most important skills I help young people develop.

Knowing which version of yourself to access. Knowing how to show up even when it is hard. Knowing that you are always the storyteller of your own life.

Everything in your body needs to be relaxed. Except one muscle.
The diaphragm.
This is me working with one of my seventeen year old vocal coaching clients on something I teach every single young person I work with.
Most teenagers breathe from their chest. Shallow. Fast. Exactly the pattern that keeps the nervous system in a stressed state.
Diaphragmatic breathing changes that. As you breathe in the diaphragm tenses and moves down. As you breathe out the tummy goes in but the diaphragm stays tight. The rest of the body stays completely relaxed.
That single shift in how a young person breathes can change how they sing, how they speak, how they perform under pressure, and how they regulate their own nervous system.
That is not just a vocal technique. That is a life skill.

This is a clip from Capital Arts on DCTV, an Emmy Award nominated show, and this episode is about my story.

The one who needed someone to show up with a song and a safe space and say you matter and your voice matters and you do not have to give up.

In 2014, after X Factor, the NZ Top 20 charts, Tough Mudder ambassador work alongside Pua Magasiva (RIP), and the NZ Hero of the Year award, I left New Zealand to expand my pond. And eventually found my way to DC and to this work.

If your teenager needs that person right now, I would love to be them.

If you missed this week's episode of REAL TALK with Emma G and Dinah, we sat down with Dr Rita D Lewis.

And I shared something I want every young person I work with to hear.

I know what it is like to be unhoused. I was addicted to a number of substances when I was homeless. I have had ten brain surgeries.

And I am standing here anyway.

Because the hard thing you are going through right now is not evidence that your story is over. It is the raw material for who you are becoming.

Dr Rita D Lewis has an Emmy Award and a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Two women. Two very different roads. The same truth underneath.

Where you come from does not determine where you end up.

That is what I help young people understand. Session by session. Song by song.
