Our second time in Chicago did not disappoint.

Last week, we spent three days at the 2026 Reading League Conference learning about the latest educational research, sharing ideas, and having meaningful conversations with literacy leaders from across the country. We even had the chance to sit in on a session led by Kareem Weaver, featured in The Right to Read documentary. Such a memorable experience!

And imagine our excitement when we spotted a familiar Chestertown face towering over the crowd of teachers. Colin from Radcliffe Creek School happened to be attending the conference too! Four small-town teachers navigating the maze of the Chicago Hilton made for quite the adventure.

A huge thank you to The Reading League for the opportunity to explore this city, learn from the best, and connect with so many people doing important work in literacy.

The sound of it all coming together.

Every one of our lessons builds on the last, and over time, the skills become automatic. Watching our students read a passage with confidence, fluency, and expression is one of the best parts of what we do.

No summer slide happening for our students. Summer tutoring is officially underway, and this is our busiest summer yet. More tutors, more students, and more reading growth than ever before. Big things are happening at Open Doors, and we’re just getting started. 😎

As we wrap up on the 2025-2026 school year, we can’t help but think of all that has been accomplished over the past five years. This was a huge one for Open Doors as we celebrated our 5th anniversary!

Each week, our space comes alive with the dedication of 12 committed tutors and enthusiastic students eager to learn. Open Doors is a place where our students build confidence, develop new skills, and experience the joy of learning. We are incredibly grateful for our village and the constant support of our community. Can’t wait for what lies ahead.

Reading is not guessing. Students learn how to look at words, break them into parts, and use sounds and patterns to read accurately. Without this instruction, unfamiliar words often lead to guessing instead of true reading.
For struggling readers, this takes time. As foundational skills strengthen, students begin to decode and spell more accurately, build fluency, and grow into confident, independent readers.
