Mark Earth Day with the Kent County Bird Club on this Saturday, April 23, on an afternoon bird walk at Eastern Neck N.W.R. For this trip, we will meet participants at the Tundra Swan Boardwalk at the north end of the island at 12:00 Noon (the refuge is closed to visitors for a youth turkey hunt in the morning). We will look for recently-arrived migrants and resident species along roads, trails and overlooks. The weather forecast is calling for mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-60s, so dress accordingly.

Just in time for tomorrow's Big Sit at Bogle's Wharf, northern birds are arriving - Purple Finches & Pine Siskins this morning, joining the Red-breasted Nuthatches that have been around for a few weeks already. The usual late-season migrants have showed up this week as well - Canada Geese, kinglets, sapsuckers, Yellow-rumped Warblers.
Stop by the Big Sit Saturday morning (10/10) at Bogle's Wharf, Eastern Neck N.W.R. to see how many species we can count from one spot. Bring your own optics and snacks, and please wear a mask for everyone's safety.

KCBC friends - As you may already know, our meeting(s) have been cancelled until further notice. We had originally thought that field trips could go on as usual, but new advice from the MOS president is recommending that social distancing may be difficult on group trips (considering scope-sharing & standing close together to get a view of a particular bird). Therefore, we will not be hosting the scheduled trip to Bombay Hook NWR this Saturday, 21 March. As far as we know, refuges remain open, although visitor centers/restrooms will likely be closed.

Getting out in the fresh air and birding is beneficial to one's mental health, so if you are so inclined, we encourage you to do so. Now would be a good time to check out (and get involved with) the MD-DC Breeding Bird Atlas 2020 at https://ebird.org/atlasmddc/home. Good birding!

On Saturday, 14 September, we will be visiting Turkey Point in Cecil County. The geography of the Elk Neck peninsula concentrates southbound migrants at the north end of the Bay. We will walk to the Turkey Point lighthouse, hoping to encounter warblers and other passerines, while keeping an eye out for raptors overhead. At this point, the weather forecast is for cloudy skies and a slight chance of showers, so bring light rain gear (just in case) along with your lunch. Meet at 8:00 AM in the Dollar General parking lot in downtown Chestertown for car-pooling.

The first KCBC meeting of the season will be tomorrow, Tuesday, 10 September at 7:00 PM at Heron Point, off East Campus Avenue in Chestertown. We will kick off the year with a program from Walter Ellison, Mapping Maryland & D.C.'s Birds: Get ready for the 3rd Maryland/D.C. Atlas Project. Walter will summarize the how and why of atlasing, share some results from previous Maryland/D.C. breeding bird atlas projects, and introduce the third effort, starting in January 2020. Learn how you can contribute, and meet new state coordinator Gabriel Foley. Note that our meeting time has moved ahead a half hour to 7:00 PM, allowing us to finish up a bit earlier. The location remains in Wesley Hall, on the second floor of Heron Point's main building. All are welcome.

Please join us for our first monthly meeting of the spring season on Tuesday, 13 March, at 7:30 PM in the Game Room at Heron Point, Chestertown. The Game Room is on the first floor, past the library on the right side of the hall.

Our guest speaker will be our own bird club member and photographer Bob Ampula. He will present a Travelogue Across Western States & Birds of Delmarva. After a winter that may be hanging on a bit too long for some tastes, it will be nice to enjoy western scenery and wildlife and become reacquainted with some of our avian neighbors.

All are welcome. We hope to see you there,

Our first field trip of the season will be a visit to the varied habitats of Bombay Hook NWR in Delaware on this Saturday, 2 September. With migration well underway, we expect to find a variety of shorebirds, herons, raptors, and songbirds. The current Saturday weather forecast is calling for showers, but mostly after 2:00 PM, so we are hoping the morning allows for some nice observations. In any case, come prepared with rain gear and remember to bring lunch and snacks. Participants should meet at 8:00 AM in front of the Dollar General store in downtown Chestertown for car-pooling.

03/29/2017

The postponed first spring meeting of the Kent County Bird Club will be next Tuesday, 4 April at 7:30 PM in Wesley Hall at Heron Point in Chestertown. Following updates on MOS activities and recent bird sightings, we will learn about the lives of Carolina Chickadees in a talk titled "What can Carolina Chickadees tell us about Backyard Food Webs?" from Desiree Narango of the University of Delaware. She has been studying how chickadee nesting success is affected by the presence of native or non-native vegetation in residential neighborhoods. All are welcome!

03/14/2017

Tonight's KCBC meeting & program on Carolina Chickadees will be postponed to a later date (with no snow and ice).

02/23/2017

The KCBC will be visiting Blackwater N.W.R. in Dorchester County on Saturday, 25 February - looking for waterfowl, eagles, pelicans and other surprises. Car-pooling from downtown Chestertown Dollar General lot at 8:00 AM.

02/23/2017

The calendar may still say February, but it sure sounds like spring outside - Carolina Wrens, various sparrows, cardinals, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet - with the ever-present goose-music in the background.

11/19/2016

Tomorrow's (11/19) field trip will start with an effort to see the Gray Kingbird that has been on Eastern Neck for the past several days. There are also large numbers of waterfowl at Eastern Neck NWR, and 140 Brown Pelicans were seen from the Butterfly Bayview viewing platform this morning (spotting scope helpful).
