🔥 New York State Burn Ban Begins TODAY March 16 🔥

The New York State Annual Burn Ban is in effect March 16 through May 14, including throughout Warren County.

As the snow melts and vegetation dries out, wildfire risk increases significantly. Fires can start with a single spark and spread quickly in spring conditions, especially with dry grass and wind.

To help prevent wildfires and protect our communities, open burning of brush, leaves, and yard debris is prohibited during this period.

✔ What is still allowed:
🟢 Small recreational cooking fires (properly contained)
🟢 Charcoal grills used for food preparation
🟢 Propane or gas grills
🟢 Fire pits with screens or guards using clean, untreated wood only

🚫 What is not allowed:
🔴 Burning brush or yard debris
🔴 Burning grass, leaves, or garden waste
🔴 Burning garbage or construction materials
🔴 Any uncontained outdoor fires

📋 Burn permits are required year-round in all towns in Warren County.

As many residents begin spring cleanup and outdoor projects, we encourage everyone to follow these regulations and take steps to reduce wildfire risk. Following the burn ban helps protect homes, property, forests, and the firefighters who respond to these incidents.

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: STATEWIDE BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🚨

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a temporary statewide burn ban, currently in effect through October 15, 2025.

This ban applies to Chestertown and all of Warren County. Due to ongoing dry conditions, low humidity, and increased fire danger, we are asking all residents to use extra caution and follow the guidelines below.

🔥 Prohibited Activities
• No open burning of brush, grass, or yard debris.
• No uncontained campfires or bonfires.
• Burning trash or leaves is illegal year-round in New York State.

✅ Allowed (with restrictions)
• Small, contained campfires for cooking or recreational use are allowed only if:
• The fire is under 3 feet in height and 4 feet in diameter or smaller.
• Only clean, untreated wood or charcoal is used.
• The fire is attended at all times and fully extinguished when finished.
• Local municipalities may impose additional restrictions — always check before burning.

⚠️ Why It’s Important

Even a small spark can lead to a dangerous wildfire in current conditions. Our volunteers have already seen an increase in brush fire calls, and preventing unnecessary incidents keeps resources available for true emergencies.

Help us protect our community, our forests, and our firefighters by following this ban and encouraging others to do the same.

🚒 What You Can Do
1. Delay any planned burning until conditions improve.
2. Dispose of debris safely through composting, mulching, or town collection services.
3. Report illegal burning or unattended fires immediately by calling 911.
4. Stay informed through the DEC and Warren County Emergency Services.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and vigilance during this time.
Let’s work together to keep Chestertown and the Adirondacks safe from fire. 🔥🚫
