Women's League of Washington College The WLWC sponsors scholarships, projects, and activities that benefit Washington College and its students.

Sixty-five years ago, Helen Gibson, wife of Daniel Gibson, the College's president (1950-1990), founded the Women's League of Washington College to foster a closer relationship between "town and gown". She often called it Chestertown's version of the Welcome Wagon, because it gave women who moved to the town an opportunity to get to know other women with similar interests. Over the years, the League has expanded its efforts on behalf of the college to include docenting at the Patrick Henry House, Hynson-Ringgold and Customs Houses, offering parents the opportunity to give Exam Care Packages to their students, and informing League members about programs at the College. Funds raised by the League are used to give the annual Helen Gibson Scholarship to a student from the Eastern Shore. In addition, the League has donated to an endowed scholarship fund, also in Mrs. Gibson's name, to ensure its continuing to be granted in the future. The League also gives an annual donation to the Miller Library to help expand it collection, and contributes to other college programs such as the Literary House. In 2008, the League agreed to endow the Helen Gibson Practice Room in the Daniel Gibson Center for the Arts.

Yesterday, Thursday, August 27, a new historical marker honoring Isaac Mason was unveiled at the corner of Spring Avenue and Calvert Street in Chestertown.

The marker honors Isaac Mason’s courageous 1846 journey to freedom from enslavement in Kent County.

A past donation from the Women’s League of Washington College made it possible for Miller Library to acquire a rare first edition of Isaac Mason’s autobiography, "Life as a Slave", an important firsthand account that helps preserve and share his story.

See the photos of the book below, along with a QR code linking to a video that provides more details about this remarkable history.

Congratulations to the winner of the Women's League Grand Raffle. Peggi Fisher is a familiar face to locals as a vendor at the Chestertown Saturday Farmers Market, where she runs Our Greek Market. Ms. Fisher won a luxurious package featuring a two-night stay at Chestertown’s historic White Swan Tavern paired with a dining gift card to Watershed Alley.

All proceeds from the raffle support scholarships and other programs at Washington College.

Inspired by the stories of the students and the profound impact the Women's League has had on the Washington College community over the last 75 years, Ms. Fisher surprised the Scholarship Committee by immediately turning her win into a moment of philanthropy.

"I am pleased to kickstart your NEXT scholarship fundraising efforts in the name of my parents, John and Norma Michels," Fisher announced.

The surprise donation, which will be formally made through the Fisher Family Fund, served as the perfect finale for the Women's League's diamond jubilee—proving that the legacy of giving started by Helen Gibson 75 years ago is still going strong in Chestertown today.
