Dear Members,

Happy New Year! We hope everyone is having a healthy and safe winter. As we enter a new year, the Chester-Horicon Senior Center board would like to review 2 ongoing policies voted in unanimously by the board. The first reminder we ask is that no political or religious discussions take place at Senior Center events. The second reminder is the policy that if North Warren School district is closed for inclement weather, all Senior Center activities are also cancelled. The Municipal Building may be unlocked for town employees as many are required to report for work. Even if the building is unlocked, we do not want any of our members put in harm’s way trying to negotiate unsafe driving conditions.

Caregiver’s meeting and our Cooking class will not be held this month, but will resume next month.

Our Beginning Mahjong class will be starting again on Wednesday, January 7th, at 11am in the Senior Room. We must have anyone interested in taking this class RSVP to [email protected] as soon as possible to reserve a place in the class. The class size is limited. Mahjong is a game which requires multiple sessions to master the basics of the game.

The Monday, Movie and Munch, on the 12th at 12:30, is the movie “Clue”. Please join us if you are able.

Our Craft class, on Monday the 26th, will be making felted soaps. Please bring a rimmed cookie sheet and a towel. RSVP to Jessica Phillips, 518-944-4266.

Dear Members,

We have many exciting events scheduled for this month. Please see the announcements below and our November calendar.

Please note that there will be no mat yoga on November 13th as Jen will be on vacation. Also, there will be no cooking classes in November and December. Our wonderful instructor Alyssa will be unavailable during this time. Classes will resume in January.

The Monday Movie and Munch offering will be “Some like it hot”, on the 10th at 12:30.

We are offering an informational class on Saturday, November 8, at 10:30am. Carl Barlow will be presenting information regarding Medicare insurance plans and options available. With so many insurance plans changing different options, we want our members to be well informed. Please RSVP to [email protected] if you are interested in attending this informational class which will be held in the Senior Room at the Chestertown Municipal Center.

The Chester-Horicon Senior Center is very pleased to offer our senior community free tickets to a holiday Christmas concert at Tannery Pond in North Creek. We are able to purchase 30 tickets to the McKrells Christmas concert to be held on Sunday, December 14th at 3pm. This will be offered on a first come first serve basis to all seniors. If you are able to attend, please RSVP to Linda Chiras at [email protected] with your name and phone number by November 30, 2025. Please write “Tannery Pond tickets” in the subject heading, thank you. This is a very popular event and should be most enjoyable.

The craft for this month will be a winter or holiday themed decoration using 12”x 6” craft cutting boards. We will use paint and embellishments to make snowman, reindeer, santa or gingerbread faces. See attached examples. To sign up please text or call Jessica at 518-944-4266. The class size is limited to 8 people, so first to RSVP holds a spot.

We wanted to respond to topics that were raised at the semi-annual meeting in September and discussed at the October board meeting. It was decided that the Tuesday-Thursday weight program, held in the courtroom at the Municipal Center, remain off the Senior Center calendar. There were some concerns raised about liability of this program as the hosts are not sanctioned instructors. The weights group will remain as a group of individuals meeting to exercise using a pre-recorded video program.

Several of our board members attended an Osteobusters class in Queensbury and were of the opinion that there is a rather steep learning curve to be able to teach a class effectively. There also was a time crunch issue with the teaching instructor leaving for the south the end of October. She would not be available if there were any questions or issues. It was decided by the board that we would reconsider this in the spring.

There was also a suggestion of having senior members work with children helping teach crafts. We are looking into working with the North Warren school district and Youth Commission to see if this is a viable option. We will keep you all updated as information becomes available through the monthly news letter.

A request was made at the Semi-annual meeting to have the Senior Center board meeting minutes available to members. If anyone would like to review the board minutes, please ask any board member and we will be happy to share that information. We try to keep everyone informed about Senior activities through the monthly newsletter and calendar.

Please email Kathi Davis at [email protected] with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
