Entering Nursing During a Difficult Time

When I was 21, I had just become a registered nurse in the Philippines. I entered the profession during one of its most challenging periods, when many newly licensed nurses faced the exploitative "volunteerism" scheme, where nurses paid hospitals for the opportunity to work simply to gain experience. Others accepted extremely low wages and restrictive contracts because opportunities were scarce, leaving little dignity in compensation. At the same time, U.S. visa retrogression had stalled the dreams of many Filipino nurses hoping to build careers in the United States.

Choosing Growth Over Circumstances

Rather than allowing these challenges to define my future, I chose a different path. I volunteered with the Philippine Red Cross Cebu Chapter, where I found not only meaningful service but also a deeper sense of purpose. I also completed a month-long intensive training program with the Safety Institute, learning emergency response, disaster preparedness, and lifesaving skills. Along the way, I had the privilege of being mentored by exceptional Red Cross instructors whose guidance continues to shape my professional practice today.

Living the Red Cross Principles

Although I am no longer an active Red Cross volunteer, the experience left a lasting mark on who I am as a nurse and as a person. I continue to live by the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality. These principles remind me that nursing is more than a profession. It is a lifelong commitment to serving others with compassion, integrity, and respect, especially during times of greatest need.
