She is in her 90s and still living independently in the home she loves.

Since losing her husband six years ago, the familiar routines of home and the connections she shares with family, friends, and neighbors have become especially meaningful.

Like many older homeowners, she wants to remain right where she is. But even small repairs can become difficult to manage, and something as simple as a railing can make a difference in feeling safe at home.

Rebuilding Together Duneland stepped in to help. The project included installing railings at the back of her home and addressing plumbing repairs, helping make everyday life a little safer and easier.

Sometimes, helping someone remain independent doesn't require a major renovation. Just a few thoughtful repairs and neighbors willing to lend a hand.

After serving his country, this local veteran set out to build a space of his own.

While working full time, he began an addition to his home and took on much of the construction himself, even raising the floor to protect it from recurring flooding.

When the project became more than one person could manage alone, Rebuilding Together Duneland stepped in. Volunteers helped with plumbing, electrical work, ductwork, windows, and wall and floor repairs, helping him move closer to having a safe, dry space to call his own.

A flagpole was also installed, a small way to thank him for his service.

It was an honor to help this local veteran, and we would love the opportunity to help more of those who have served our country.

He spent more than 40 years working in the steel mills. Then a fall changed what he could manage on his own.

Now relying on a walker, this Duneland homeowner found that everyday tasks and keeping up with home repairs had become more difficult. After a lifetime of hard work, he needed a little help with things he once could have handled himself.

Rebuilding Together Duneland stepped in to help. The project included work on his roof and gutters, replacing an exterior entrance door, repairing a ceiling, addressing electrical issues, and adding a handrail along the basement stairs.

Sometimes a little help can make a big difference in someone's ability to remain safe and independent in the home they love.

If home repairs have become more than you can manage on your own, you don't have to face them alone.

Imagine facing another Northwest Indiana winter relying on space heaters and heated blankets to stay warm.

For one Duneland homeowner, that was a familiar reality. She and her family had worked hard to maintain their home, tackling repairs as they could. But some things were simply beyond what they could manage on their own.

With help from Rebuilding Together Duneland, work on her boiler was completed. The project also included replacing door k***s, painting, addressing insulation, and taking care of yard work. These were the kinds of improvements that could make everyday life a little easier and home more comfortable.

If keeping your home warm has become a worry, you don't have to face it alone.

Every homeowner has a story. An older neighbor determined to remain independent. A veteran who needs a little help to make his home safer. A family facing home repairs that have simply become too much to manage alone.

Over the next several weeks, we'll share some of those stories. We won't share names, but we hope someone recognizes themselves, a family member, or a neighbor in a similar situation who could benefit from Rebuilding Together Duneland.

Sometimes a little help can make a big difference. 💚
Rebuilding Together Duneland is now accepting homeowner applications for Rebuilding Day 2027.

Each year, our volunteers come together to help local homeowners with needed repairs and improvements that help them remain safe, warm and dry in their homes.

Maybe you know a neighbor, friend or family member who could use a helping hand. Or maybe you could use some help yourself.

Rebuilding Together Duneland is now accepting homeowner applications for 2027.

On our annual Rebuilding Day, volunteers provide free home repairs that help Duneland neighbors stay safe, warm and dry in the homes they love.

Who can apply:
✅ Homeowners who live in the home as their primary residence
✅ Home must be located within the Duneland School District
✅ Homeowner must be current on mortgage and property taxes

Preference is given to veterans, older adults and homeowners with disabilities who have lived in their home for at least 10 years.
