CHRISTMAS IS COMING!

Despite the 70F+ temperatures, Christmas is less than 2 months away and The Duneland Garden Club is now focused on gathering enough evergreen boughs to decorate downtown Chesterton. We need live greens to make 23 hanging baskets and 15 street planters in time for the Hometown Holiday celebration. If you are pruning your evergreens, please contact us so we can pick up your boughs and use them in our creations. It takes a massive amount of greenery for this project!

Pictured are members of The Duneland Garden Club working to make the baskets and planters last year. It is quite a production, but to be successful, we need enough boughs to make this happen. With the derecho that came through in August many trees were lost which might seriously impact availability. Please help us if you can by texting Karen at 219-776-2282 to arrange for pick up. John Nash, master gardener, was the featured speaker at The Duneland Garden Club’s October meeting. His topic was Common Plant Diseases and Pests in NW Indiana, and he told how to treat ailments with both chemical and organic solutions.

John spent over 15 years answering questions on the Porter County Master Gardener’s help line and has transitioned to his own consulting business. He owns Plant Fixer LLC and can help with economical garden solutions. Contact John Nash at 219-999-2302 or email at [email protected]

The Club enjoyed John’s informative talk as he had many suggestions on treating tree ailments. As trees are expensive to replace, identifying a problem early on and taking immediate action can spare the expense of having to remove a tree and replace it.

Members of The Duneland Garden Club volunteered on the Daffodil Hill Project at Brincka Cross Gardens this morning helping to plant 2000 daffodil bulbs for spring bloom. The rain held off long enough to get many bulbs planted but there are still many more to go.

Work will continue on Saturday and Sunday with hopes of getting all of the bulbs planted. Volunteer to be part of the legacy of Daffodil Hill! The spring show of glorious blooms will adorn the area for years to come!

Crews are working 10 – 1 and please help for as long as you can. Text Olga to confirm or with questions (219-405-5683). Small shovels and/ or augers on drills will be helpful if you have them.

The Duneland Garden Club gathered with the four other clubs in the Northwest District to attend their annual meeting and to witness the planting of a native tulip tree at the Hobart Historical Society. The tree was donated by The Hobart Garden Club and Wanda Zahrt, The Garden Club of Indiana President, was there to celebrate the tree planting. Wanda’s theme for her term is “Plant America with Natives” so it was fitting that she shares the joy of seeing another native tree planted.

Zann Wilson, a local succulent enthusiast, gave an interesting and informative presentation on succulents, and all the attendees went home with a succulent to nurture.

The group had an opportunity to tour the Hobart Historical Society and to also catch up with friends from other clubs.

The Northwest District of The Garden Club of Indiana is comprised of clubs from Crown Point, the Duneland Area, Hobart, Munster and Valparaiso. Anyone interested in joining a garden club can find information at: https://gardenclubofindiana.org/

The Duneland Garden Club recently awarded a check for $500 to the Westchester Migratory Bird Sanctuary in recognition of their work conserving and restoring their property on 11th Street in Chesterton.
