The U.S. is home to about 250 major fresh-water lakes. Nearly 100 of these are in Alaska, and 100 in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Maine.

But here's why lakes matter beyond the stunning views: they're the kidneys of our ecosystem. Lakes filter water, recharge groundwater, support incredible biodiversity, and regulate local climates. They're nurseries for fish species that eventually make their way to our oceans, feeding both wildlife and communities. Healthy lakes mean healthy rivers. Healthy rivers mean healthy seas.

From the Great Lakes to mountain alpine pools, these freshwater systems are under pressure from pollution, climate change, and overuse. That's why today we celebrate and recommit to protecting them.

North Carolina has been the #1 sweetpotato producing state in the U.S. since 1971 and it's not even close. The state produces nearly 60% of America's sweetpotatoes, thanks to the hot, moist climate and rich, fertile soil.

In 2016, North Carolina harvested nearly 95,000 acres of sweetpotatoes. That's almost 30,000 MORE acres than California, Louisiana, and Mississippi combined. Counties like Sampson, Johnston, Wilson, and Nash are the powerhouses, accounting for about half of the state's entire supply.

CRP reduces soil erosion, improves water quality, increases wildlife habitat, and strengthens ecosystems.

Why does this matter? Since 1985, it's been one of the largest voluntary conservation programs in the U.S., protecting millions of acres of farmland.

And it's impact is only getting bigger. USDA just accepted 2.2 million acres into CRP for 2026 - a highly competitive enrollment with nearly 2.5 million acres submitted. Of those, just over 982,000 acres are re-enrollments from expiring contracts, and 1.5 million are new land being protected for the first time. Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota lead the way.

Farmers and ranchers choosing to protect our soil, water, and wildlife while securing their own financial stability. That's sustainable agriculture.

Meet the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol.

If you haven't heard of them, here's what you need to know. This voluntary sustainability program brings quantifiable, verifiable goals to responsible cotton production, measuring progress across six key areas: land use, soil health, water management, greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and fiber quality. Through sophisticated data collection and independent third-party verification, they're transforming how U.S. cotton is grown and traced.

The impact? One in four U.S. cotton acres now provides field-level data through the program - 2.34 million acres in the 2026 crop year alone. Despite challenging economic conditions, growers are voluntarily formalizing their sustainability practices, gaining actionable insights that help them refine farming practices and improve operational efficiency.

This is what transparent, responsible agriculture looks like. American cotton growers are setting the gold standard.
