At the young age of 22, Jewel has already faced numerous losses and traumas.

When her mother could no longer afford her tuition fees, Jewel was forced to leave school after 8th grade and work at a factory with her aunt. Shortly after, her mother became ill and fell into debt bo***ge to pay for her hospitalization. Jewel worked overtime to pay her mother’s medical debts, but no matter how hard she worked, she could not pay off the high interest.

Jewel felt guilty she couldn’t support her mother, so when a friend promised her a good job with a high-paying salary, Jewel believed her. However, instead of the job that was promised, Jewel was trafficked to work in a brothel. Confused and afraid, Jewel was sold to customers daily. She felt numb inside, like there was no escape.

After two years, Jewel met our partner’s outreach team when they visited the brothel. They invited her to join their drop-in center and encouraged her to participate in the vocational training they offered. With a stirring of hope, Jewel joined the nail art program and quickly excelled. She also received much needed trauma counseling. Jewel has now graduated from the program and works as a nail art trainer at the drop-in center! No longer does she live in constant fear of not having enough, and she can now support both herself and her mother financially.

31% of victims are recruited by a family member, and 27% are recruited by an intimate partner. -Polaris

Human trafficking is highly personal. While there is often overwhelming concern about kidnapping and complex trafficking schemes, data shows victims usually know and trust their traffickers. Instead of physical chains, traffickers will employ psychological tactics to control their victims and demand their loyalty.

It is the ultimate exploitation of vulnerability when the people who are supposed to love and protect you are instead the cause of your worst nightmare. To learn more about recognizing the warning signs of human trafficking, visit warinternational.org/civilian-first-responder/

Since Serey was six years old, she had known nothing but the abuse of strangers and the torture of her captor.

Until age twelve, Serey’s mother continued to sell her daughter’s body, eager to make a profit from her pain. When a local organization finally rescued Serey, a new life began. She moved to a safehouse and soon became the most determined and ambitious student in the school.

As Serey continued to excel, she entered one of our partnering programs where she learned how to create lavish cakes and lattes. After she graduated at the top of her class, our partners hired Serey as a manager and trainer, and she now nurtures other young women as she teaches them skills in baking, cake decorating, and serving as a barista.

Once a lonely, enslaved child, Serey has blossomed into a confident woman committed to seeing others experience the joy and dignity she has found.

Today we observe World Su***de Prevention Day. It is a day that, sadly, must be observed all over the globe.

At WAR, Int’l, mental health is one of the risk factors we address. Many of the individuals we work with have suffer from depression, anxiety, and PTSD following the trauma they’ve endured. If unaddressed, these issues can take even deeper roots and lead to harmful and suicidal actions.

As we work to see lives restored and lifted to dignity, we connect individuals with therapists so they can get the help they need. Many in our programs have also found making spa products and creating jewelry and other handcrafted items to be therapeutic.

If you or someone you know is having harmful or suicidal thoughts, please do not hesitate to dial 988 to contact the free, confidential National Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, open 24/7. This new, shorter phone number is easier for people to remember and access mental health crisis services across the United States.

It is estimated that a child arrives alone at a major railway station in India every five minutes.

These children could be seeking work to help their families, running away from abuse, or may simply be orphaned with nowhere else to go. Criminals often prey on vulnerable children, win their trust, and then traffic them to other places for the purpose of exploitation.

One local protection force has launched an initiative to create child-friendly spaces at prominent railway stations that provide a safe setting where children can receive the resources and support they need to identify their traffickers and begin to heal from their trauma.

Since the initial launch of two of these safe spaces, called “Happiness Hubs,” 62 children have been rescued. Officials plan to continue improving and replicating these hubs in other key stations so they can expand their reach to countless other child victims.

At the age of fourteen, Ava’s mother sold her to repay gambling debts, and Ava was forced to work for a pimp who cared only for money and provided no health protection.

Desperately needing to flee her complex situation, Ava remembered the words of our partners who had promised to help her begin a new life. Filled with hope, Ava ran into the welcoming arms awaiting her at the safehouse.

Five months pregnant, Ava was devastated to discover she tested positive for HIV. Our partners lovingly walked beside her and watched her slowly begin to blossom as she embraced her journey toward healing. When her son was born, Ava proudly introduced him to her safehouse family.

However, her new baby boy soon fell very ill, and this triggered Ava’s memories of her own mother’s betrayal.

Safehouse staff faithfully stood in the gap for Ava and her son, remaining present in her pain and speaking words of life in the midst of her despair. After many days, doctors deemed the baby well enough to return home! With a lot of support and encouragement, Ava and her son are now thriving, a testament to the power of hope and the significance of unconditional love.

TEXAS: Don't mistake that gut instinct. A rookie in the Texas police force recently stumbled upon nine victims of human trafficking during a routine traffic stop. In a city with a population under 1,400, cases like these illustrate that no zip code is immune. Human trafficking is pandemic–it is everywhere regardless of location and demographics.
