Hercules Posey was the celebrated chef enslaved by George Washington, renowned for his culinary mastery and his prominent presence in Philadelphia’s high society. As the head of the kitchen at the President’s House, he managed a sophisticated staff and earned a rare degree of autonomy, selling leftovers to earn a significant personal income and dressing in fine silks and velvets. However, facing the prospect of being returned to forced labor at Mount Vernon, Hercules staged a daring escape in 1797. Despite Washington’s efforts to locate him, Hercules successfully secured his freedom and spent the remainder of his life in New York City, where he worked as a laborer and cook. His legacy endures as a testament to professional excellence and the pursuit of liberty under the most restrictive circumstances.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that everyone can be great because everyone can serve. That spirit will be felt across Chester on Monday, January 19, during a community Day of Service event beginning at 10 AM.

Our Co-Founder and Executive Director, Patricia Earl Trippley Demiranda, will join neighbors, families, and community partners for this meaningful day. Pat is always grateful for moments like these, opportunities to listen, learn, and stay connected to the community we serve.

The Will Trippley Foundation is rooted in service, working year-round to provide free programs for families navigating all kinds of loss, including the loss of a loved one, incarceration, addiction, abandonment, or major life changes. Showing up for our community is at the heart of everything we do.

This event will take place at the Cultural Arts & Technology Center (CAAT Center - 2300 W. 4th Street, Chester, PA).

The day includes opportunities to:
✨Take the Chester Black History Tour
✨Experience the Proof of Truth: The Resilient Presence of Chester’s African American Community mobile museum
✨Fill Blessing Bags for those in need
✨Contribute to a community mural
✨Connect with local organizations and living legends

If you’re attending, please stop by, say hello, and connect with Pat. She’d love to meet you and hear from you.

Service brings us together, and that’s how we build a stronger, more caring community.

We honor the life of Claudette Colvin, whose courageous refusal to surrender her seat as a teenager in Montgomery, Alabama was one of several acts of resistance that challenged segregation before the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Ms. Colvin later became one of the plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, the federal case that reached the Supreme Court and led to the end of bus segregation. Her life reminds us that progress is shaped not only by moments, but by sustained courage and truth. May we honor her legacy and continue the work of justice.
