Let’s get together for a night of good food, good friends, great stories, and plenty of brotherhood as we celebrate their careers and everything they’ve given to the job.

The City of Chester Bureau of Fire and Chester Firefighters Local 1400 would like to announce the retirement of Captain Michael Bernath.
Captain Bernath was hired by the City of Chester Bureau of Fire on May 7, 2001, beginning his career on the C Platoon. Captain Bernath spent the majority of his career assigned to the C Platoon on Squrt 81, before transferring to the B Platoon at Station 82, where he served as the operator of Tower 82.
In October 2016, Captain Bernath was promoted to the rank of Captain.
In 2022, Captain Bernath transferred to Fire Headquarters, where he assumed the position of Fire Marshal. Under Captain Bernath’s leadership, the Fire Marshal’s Office was reestablished, providing an important service to the City of Chester and its residents.
After more than 25 years of dedicated service to the City of Chester Bureau of Fire, Captain Bernath is now beginning a well-deserved retirement.
On behalf of the City of Chester Bureau of Fire and Chester Firefighters Local 1400 we would like to congratulate Captain Michael Bernath on his retirement and thank him for his many years of dedicated service, leadership, and commitment to the citizens of Chester.

FM 24s last official day at the Bureau is the last day in September, today was his last day working at Fire Headquarters.

Today we proudly celebrate the 65th Anniversary of IAFF Local 1400.

Sixty-five years ago, a dedicated group of firefighters came together to establish a union that would fight not only for better wages and working conditions, but also for professionalism, safety, and the future of the fire service in the City of Chester. Those charter members laid the foundation for everything we are today. Their vision, determination, and courage created a legacy that continues to guide us every day. Without their commitment and sacrifice, Local 1400 would not be the organization it is today.

Since 1961, generations of Chester firefighters have proudly carried that legacy forward—answering every call, protecting our community, standing beside one another in times of triumph and tragedy, and never losing sight of the values our founders established.

Today, we honor every member of IAFF Local 1400, especially our charter members whose leadership and foresight made this brotherhood possible. We are grateful for those who came before us, proud to serve alongside today’s members, and committed to leaving an even stronger union for those who will follow.

Happy 65th Anniversary to the members, retirees, and families of IAFF Local 1400. Thank you to the men who founded this great local. Your legacy lives on in every alarm answered, every life protected, and every firefighter who proudly calls themselves a member of Chester City Professional Firefighters Local 1400.

Vice President Polk had the honor of presenting the inaugural Chester Firefighters Scholarship for Service and Dedication Award to Jayon Burton and Shadrack George.
This year marks the first time that Local 1400 has awarded this scholarship, established to recognize students who exemplify outstanding service, dedication, leadership, and commitment to their community.
Local 1400 is proud to honor Jayon and Shadrack for their accomplishments and the exemplary character they have demonstrated. We extend our sincere congratulations and wish them continued success as they pursue their future educational and professional endeavors!

Congratulations to the members of Chester Fire Fighters Local 1400 on earning 2nd Place at the Annual Delaware County Fallen Fire & EMS Memorial Softball Tournament this past weekend!

This tournament has become a tradition that our members look forward to every year, and we are especially proud to say that Local 1400 has participated since the tournament’s inception. After years of competition and camaraderie, this year marked a historic milestone for our team as we advanced to the championship game for the first time ever, ultimately bringing home a hard-fought second-place finish.

While we’re proud of the accomplishment on the field, this event is about much more than softball. It is an opportunity to honor and remember the firefighters and EMS professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice while strengthening the bonds of brotherhood among first responders throughout Delaware County.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, participating departments, and supporters who continue to make this event possible each year.

Most importantly, we remember the fallen heroes whose service, sacrifice, and dedication will never be forgotten
