Sonrisas Solidarity not charity. Collaborative projects with Nicaraguan communities, decision making led by Nicaraguans, US fundraising based on a reparations model.

Sonrisas organizes across imposed borders, bringing together lived experiences of those from strategically exploited countries. Through uplifting those whose needs are most inaccessible, we weave together community that is rooted in care. Sonrisas, like mycelium, nurtures our ecosystems of interconnectedness. With great honor, we commit to:

Work that is interconnected and intersectional

Center t

he wisdom of global south lived experiences

Support food sovereignty and ecological liberation

Create networks of care for our immigrant community

Uplift ancestral knowledge sharing

Share valuable ways of decolonizing wealth structures and restructuring its equitable redistribution

Engage in solidarity that follows decision-making by those affected by strategic oppression

Dear beings, Please consider donating before the year ends. We are looking forward to many wonderful classes this season, but we need to make sure we can pay our educators and improve the infrastructure of the space. Point blank, we NEED a functioning toilet y'all! *If you are unable to donate, please share, connect us with people who can provide funds or volunteer your skills (building, grant writing, etc.)

For the past two years Sonrisas has been working with healing center, Centro Armonia, in Matagalpa. We provide free consultations, therapy sessions, herbs and flower essences to women & girls dealing with domestic & sexual abuse. Natali Sequeira, who runs the center and has also been part of the Clinical Herbalism class with Paul Bergner, has been working with Sonrisas for two years now. We originally started working with street children addicted to smelling glue, giving consultations and flower essences. After she found an another person interested in funding those consultations, we started working with women who have open cases of domestic & sexual abuse.

Each consultation costs $10, this includes herbs & an essence. Centro Armonia (& Natali) are graciously donating part of their time to keep the cost down. We have been working with over ten women & girls in the past year, hoping to give each patient at least 3 consultations, with additional consultations for more serious cases. We have a wait-list for other women who have open cases of domestic abuse that the Nicaragua government has been sending to us. All patients remain anonymous and Centro Armonia respects their privacy. Sonrisas is only supplied with the number of consultations each patient receives, a general summary of their cases and documentation from the clinic and the government... no names are ever passed on.

We are looking for additional funding for this project to continue the consultations and help additional women.
$10 a consultation! $60 helps a woman get therapy, medicine & support for half a year.

Thank you!

Lagartillo September update!

We have completed our funding for our school meal program for the year, assuring that the students have lunches till the end of the year. We also have funded the community pharmacy and emergency medical fund.

Additional projects include our final funding for Byron, our amazing veterinary student. He is now finishing his course in surgery and will be completely is veterinary title with Sonrisas help. We are continuing with our grey water recycling projects and finishing some latrines before we embark on more. As well, we are funding a latrine for the medical center in Lagartillo, so those visiting the village for care don't have to seek out latrines at the homes of those in the community.

Thank you to all who have made this possible!

Las Iguanas September update!

We were glad to be able to fund a project that supplied the Las Iguanas school with school supplies for all the children and teachers, including pens, pencils, notebooks, paper, etc. It was a really lovely project to see in action, because Las Iguanas school has very little resources and the children were not being able to practice writing a lot of the time and were only watching the teacher write on the board. We are hoping to keep funding going for this project as well as raising funds for a meal program and a small library that the children can access after school.
