Today we honor the men who served our country during the Vietnam War—many of whom did not receive the welcome they deserved.

Today, we say it loud and clear: Welcome Home. Thank you for your service.

A special thank you to Because of the Brave and Rossini's Italian Restaurant and Pizza for hosting this meaningful gathering.

🇺🇸 National POW/MIA Recognition Day 🇺🇸

The crypt originally designated for the Vietnam War Unknown remains vacant. On September 17, 1999—National POW/MIA Recognition Day—it was rededicated to honor all U.S. service members still missing from the Vietnam War.

In 2022, members of our Post had the solemn honor of laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and participating in Wreaths Across America, thanks to the efforts of Because of the Brave.

Today and always, we remember their sacrifice and reaffirm our promise: You Are Not Forgotten.

Tonight we celebrated the induction of John White into the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame. Cheshire VFW, American Legion, Army Air Force Roundtable members along with his family and Councilwoman Allard were on hand for this prestigious achievement!
John White is only the 2nd Cheshire resident to receive this honor. Barney Barnum was inducted in 2021 (pictured below).

Join Us Tonight to Honor Our Veterans

Tonight, we invite you to come together as a community to honor and recognize our Veterans at the Town’s Veterans Day ceremony, followed by a special tribute on the CHS football field.

📍 Where: Medal of Honor Plaza, Bartlem Park (next to the Yellow House)
🕔 Ceremony Time: 5:00 PM
🏈 Game Recognition: Veterans will be honored on the CHS football field at 6:45 PM

After the 5:00 pm ceremony, we’ll gather under the Because of the Brave tent at the football field for some food and camaraderie before the Veterans are recognized on the field. Let’s come together to show our gratitude for those who have served!

The VFW offers two Patriotic Written Essay competitions with monetary awards given to recipients chosen. The due date is October 31, 2024.
The Voice of Democracy Program is open to students in grades 9-12 with this year's theme “Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?”. Department (State) winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary, and receive their portion of $171,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $35,000.
The Patriot’s Pen Program is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with this year’s theme “My Voice in America’s Democracy?”. Department (State) winners receive a portion of $55,000 in national awards. National Winners will receive at least $500. The first-place national award is currently $5,000.

Veterans and Youth together for Memorial Day. Veterans educating our youth and passing on the legacy of those who have gone before us protecting the freedom we enjoy everyday. The educational focus was on the 80th anniversary of D-day.

Wreaths Across America Day was December 16, 2023. Members of the Cheshire VFW and American Legion Posts placed wreaths in Cheshire and at Arlington National Cemetery.
At Arlington, Vietnam Veterans Don Falk and Randy Clark, Cheshire High School Class of 1965 members, honored their classmate John Gravil who was killed in action in Vietnam.
We also caught up with Medal of Honor Recipient CHS '58 graduate, Vietnam Veteran, and our VFW Post member Col. Harvey C. "Barney" Barnum Jr. (Randy Clark, Don Falk, Barney Barnum, Matt Bowman)

Veterans Day in Cheshire this year was extra special! After the ceremony Veterans were honored on the Cheshire High football field prior to the game. 103-year-old 1st Lt Florence Bryant (US Army Nurse Corps) and recent boot camp graduate 17-year-old Pvt. Gianna Esposito (US Army) were in attendance!
We cannot than Bozzuto's Media and Because of the Brave and Athletic Director John Perosino along with Cheshire High School enough for assisting in honoring our local Veterans!

Local VFW members and Veterans chatted with the Navy Midshipmen who were passing through Cheshire today. The Midshipmen are running (over 400 miles) the game ball from Annapolis to Foxborough, MA for the annual Army-Navy game tomorrow!
Cheshire High School students and administrators were also on hand to welcome the Midshipman as well as Because of the Brave.

Cheshire Veterans Day ceremony tonight 5pm at the Medal of Honor Plaza in Bartlem Park 520 South Main St Cheshire.
Following this all Veterans will be honored on the football field at Cheshire High School before the game at approximately 645 pm.
