Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who never made it back home.

We remember their courage, their service, and the families who continue to carry their memory each and every day.

From all of us at the Chesapeake Union Township Volunteer Fire Department, we thank and honor our fallen heroes. 🇺🇸

As we close out EMS Week, we want to take a moment to remember and honor Assistant Chief Michael Campbell — a brother, mentor, leader, and friend who gave his life in service to others.

Michael passed away in the line of duty on September 8, 2025, at the age of 48 while working for Lawrence County EMS as an Advanced EMT. His loss continues to be deeply felt throughout our department and the entire emergency services community.

The fire and EMS service was not just a job to Michael — it was his life. He began his journey as a junior firefighter and dedicated his entire life to serving others across many departments throughout Ohio. Michael became a volunteer firefighter in 1996, earned his Firefighter I and EMT certifications in 1997, became a Fire Safety Inspector in 2001, Fire Instructor and Firefighter II in 2003, and Advanced EMT in 2005.

Michael joined our department in 2018 and served in many roles throughout his time with us, ultimately serving as Assistant Chief at the time of his passing. His leadership, experience, and dedication helped shape our department into what it is today.

But more than the titles and certifications, Michael will always be remembered for who he was as a person. He was the life of the party, always making jokes and keeping everyone laughing. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. One of his favorite things in the fire service was listening to the bagpipes, and some of his happiest moments were spent sitting around a fire with friends, sharing stories and enjoying a cold beer.

Michael’s impact on the fire and EMS community will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the friendships he built along the way.

Thank you, Assistant Chief Campbell, for your lifetime of service, sacrifice, leadership, and friendship. We miss you every day.

As we wrap up EMS Week, we would like to recognize one of our own, Lieutenant Cheryl McMaster, for her dedication and countless contributions to our department and community.

Cheryl began serving as a volunteer firefighter in 2014 and became an EMT in 2016. Since joining the department, she has taken on many responsibilities both on emergency scenes and behind the scenes that help keep the department moving forward every single day.

In addition to serving as a firefighter and EMT, Cheryl serves as the department Secretary and Treasurer, manages the department’s social media and public relations, writes and manages grants that help provide equipment and resources for the department, and works closely with community organizations to help victims of house fires and other emergencies connect with needed resources and support.

She also organizes our annual Shop with a Firefighter program, helping make Christmas special for children and families in our community each year. Cheryl is heavily involved in community outreach, department events, fundraising efforts, public education, and supporting department operations in any way needed.

In addition, Cheryl designs and creates much of the department apparel, including department t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, and other custom wear that members proudly wear throughout the community and at events. She is also the one usually behind the camera, capturing department trainings, events, calls, and special moments so they can be shared and remembered.

Beyond the department, Cheryl continues to advance her education and career in healthcare while always bringing that knowledge back to benefit the fire service and the community she serves.

Whether it is answering calls, helping families after emergencies, working on grants late at night, organizing events, designing apparel, taking photos, making posts, handling paperwork, or simply being there whenever needed, Cheryl’s dedication to this department and community is evident in everything she does.

Thank you, Cheryl, for your hard work, leadership, compassion, and commitment to serving others every day. đźš’đźš‘
