๐Ÿ Hive Inspection Update ๐Ÿ

The drought has been brutal this season. We walked into todayโ€™s inspection having already made peace with the idea that 2026 just isnโ€™t a honey year. And honestly? Most of the hives confirmed our fears โ€” healthy colonies, solid brood patterns, queens laying beautifullyโ€ฆ but the supers are light. Some are light enough that weโ€™re going to start supplemental feeding just to keep them comfortable heading into summer. When the flowers donโ€™t deliver, we step up.

Thatโ€™s the job.

But then we got to our last swarm hive โ€” the scrappy little colony that started from a spring catch โ€” and stopped in our tracks. ๐Ÿ

They are on their way to filling a super. ๐Ÿฏ

Sometimes the bees humble you. While the rest of the apiary was grinding through drought conditions, this crew quietly figured it out and put up a super like it was nothing. A little reminder that you donโ€™t count the bees out.

Weโ€™ll take the win.

Swarm season is here, and that means one thing: free bees. ๐Ÿ

Happy Motherโ€™s Day to the real queen bee ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘‘

She runs the hive, keeps everything in order, and somehow makes it all look effortless. Iโ€™ve learned a lot from watching bees โ€” but watching her? Thatโ€™s where I really figured out how a colony thrives.

Not every hive makes it through winter, and today we lost one. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’”

The unseasonably warm January weather revealed what weโ€™d hoped wouldnโ€™t be trueโ€”one of our hives didnโ€™t survive. A full inspection confirmed a complete dieout.

Beekeeping teaches you to hold success and loss in the same hands. Every colony we lose is a teacher, showing us what to adjust, what to watch for, and how to do better next season.

For now, these empty combs will rest in storage, waiting. Hopefully in the Spring we will catch a swarm and these frames will hum with life again. The bees will fill the wax cells and this hive will get a second chance.

Rest well, little ones. You taught us something

I donโ€™t know whoโ€™s happier for this rare warm January day โ€“ me or the bees. ๐Ÿโ˜€๏ธ

Days like this are a good reminder that even in the dead of winter, thereโ€™s always life humming just below the surface, waiting for the right moment to emerge.
