⛵ 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 🚢
Sail250 is coming to Norfolk, bringing tall ships, maritime heritage, and unforgettable waterfront experiences to Virginia’s coast.
The celebration kicks off with a massive Parade of Sail on Friday, June 19, featuring dozens of international vessels alongside returning favorites. Visitors can tour historic ships, enjoy cultural events, and experience the seafaring stories that have shaped the region and the nation.

250 years ago TODAY, the Fifth Virginia Convention voted for independence from Great Britain and unanimously adopted the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The convention had voted in May to draft a resolution of independence, create a committee to prepare a declaration of the rights of Virginia citizens, and devise a form of government for the Commonwealth. Written by George Mason, the Virginia Declaration of Rights would become the foundation of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Bill of Rights and the French Declaration of Rights of Man, drafted by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1789.

That same week in Philadelphia, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduced a resolution in the Continental Congress asserting, "That these United Colonies are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved." The resolution would be adopted by Congress on July 2, 1776.

The City of Chesapeake and the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Foundation are throwing a party for Virginia’s and our nation’s 250th birthdays! It’s called Charter to Chesapeake – and you’re invited! Join us for Charter to Chesapeake next weekend -- June 20th & 21st from 10 to 4 at the GBBW Park.

This free event will be full of fun learning experiences, including a history walk with activities and stories, as well as the arrival of the tall ship Sultana, a replica of the original schooner that patrolled Hampton Roads before the Revolutionary War in search of Virginia smugglers and Tea Tax violators. And of course, the NCHSC be there to help celebrate with displays and Revolutionary-era documents from our collection. Come experience the people and stories that make up our history!
