Never forgotten. ๐๐๐
๐ค Honoring Police Officer Raymond N. Shacklock ๐ค
During National Police Week, the Chesapeake Police Department pauses to remember and honor the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. This year, we are proud to recognize and add Special Officer Raymond Shacklock to our memorial wall after his line-of-duty death was formally recognized. His name will also be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. ๐บ๐ธ
On September 14, 1921, Officer Shacklock was shot and killed while pursuing a suspect during a raid on an illegal alcohol still in the Bruceโs Park area of what was then Norfolk County. After officers disrupted the illegal operation, a suspect hiding nearby fled into the brush. Officer Shacklock pursued the suspect and was later found mortally wounded in a nearby field.
The suspect was later arrested, convicted of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Shacklock had served with the Norfolk County Police Department for approximately three months. Tragically, he was killed on what would have been his final day with the agency after previously submitting his resignation at the request of his wife. He was survived by his wife and young child.
More than a century later, we ensure his sacrifice is not forgotten.
So that we never forget. ๐ฏ๏ธ๐
