Please join our friends at Our Daily Gnome Creative Arts Center for their Children's Mental Health Awareness Walk (aka Gnome One Walks Alone) coming up on May 13th.

Come run Gnome One Walks Alone on May 13 with me.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and that's a cause that's especially close to our hearts, especially considering that firefighters are more likely to die by su***de than in the line of duty, according to a study done by the Ruderman Family Foundation.

Separating one's personal and professional lives can be nearly impossible for first responders and with that comes with stressors, like the obvious everyday stress of putting your life on the line, along with the less obvious, like having to leave family functions, missing bedtime with your child[ren] and dealing with sleep deprivation. Those everyday life "stressors that impact life outside the department" can also impact you on the job, too.

That's why we strive to help you strengthen the relationships you have at home - with your spouse, child[ren] and other family members - through weekly family counseling with Barb Ford, M.A., NCC, CTRI, horseback riding lessons alongside your child[ren] and outdoor activities geared towards getting you to communicate more openly.

Even the simplest things, like learning to share your feelings more freely, can strengthen those relationships and improve your overall well-being. You might even find that doing so through our programs - and the feeling of being happier and more confident in your new skills - allows you to work more effectively and productively, too. Learn more about how we can help you do that at www.hkfva.org. 💙

Let's break the stigma surrounding mental health. Mental illness is not a personal failure or weakness. It's okay to ask for help.
