Our 24/7 food lockers at Sentara CarePlex Hospital are helping ensure that nutritious food is available anytime it’s needed. Since opening in August 2025, these lockers have already served 63 households in our community.

If you or someone you know could use extra support, simply call (757) 596-7188 to receive a code and get set up with a locker.

Half of the lockers are reserved for patients being discharged, and the rest are open to anyone in the community experiencing hunger. Together, we’re nourishing our neighbors in new ways because food and health go hand in hand.

When Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was on the air, Fred Rogers often fed his goldfish during the show, narrating the act to help children understand the importance of caring for animals. One day, his team received a letter from a young blind girl who was worried that sometimes he might forget to feed them, since she couldn’t see the screen, she could only rely on what he said. Moved by her concern and the trust she placed in him, Rogers made a small but meaningful change: from then on, he always verbally announced, “I’m feeding the fish,” so she and other visually impaired viewers would know the fish were cared for.

The story became one of many examples of Rogers’ deep empathy and attention to the needs of individual children in his audience. For him, it wasn’t a minor note, it was a chance to affirm that every child’s perspective mattered. That simple adjustment not only reassured the blind girl but also modeled thoughtfulness and inclusivity for millions of viewers. It showed that kindness could live in the smallest details, and that even feeding the fish could become a way of saying, “I hear you, and you matter.”
