Cheney Depot Society We are a group of people from the City Of Cheney intent on preserving the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot built in the Cheney, Washington in 1929

Our goal is to relocate and re-purpose the unique 1929 Spanish style Northern Pacific Railroad depot while preserving its historic features and story. The depot currently sits between live tracks on BNSF property. The company has declared the building surplus and it is slated for demolition. We organized to save this landmark in the City of Cheney which served as a gateway to the community and the college for 90 years. This page serves to mark our progress and encourage participation in this endeavor.

We are thrilled to announce that the Cheney Depot Society is the recipient of the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer's Award for Outstanding Stewardship!

Members of our board traveled to Ellensburg, Washington this past week to accept this award at PLACES 2026, the annual conference hosted by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP), and this year's host, the Ellensburg Downtown Association (EDA).

Words cannot express how much this award means to the Cheney Depot Society, this is a wonderful honor not only for the Depot, but also for the City of Cheney!

We want to thank everyone who helped on this 12-year journey, whether you donated $1, volunteered an hour of your time, or shared our vision with one person! Without you, we could not have succeeded in our mission to preserve and restore the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot.

We can't forget Eastern Coffee Roasters, who, as our tenant, is a key component of "adaptive reuse", where a historic building is preserved and contributes to its community! Our non-profit saved the building, ECR is breathing life into it every day with every cup of coffee and every customer!

Today some of our Volunteers put down some landscaping material to help prevent erosion on our hillsides until we can get plants in.

While these are nailed down, we ask that the community please don’t walk and play on them as we would like them not to be ripped up and destroyed.

Northern Pacific Monad Pattern China

Welcome back to another installment of our monthly artifact post, today we discuss the history of our railroad china that we have on display in our meeting room (former Baggage Room)

The Northern Pacific Monad Pattern was designed in 1959 and used until Amtrak took over passenger train operations in May of 1971. The Northern Pacific Monad Pattern was manufactured by the Shenango Company of New Castle, PA. The Monad Pattern was an NP exclusive pattern to be used only by the Northern Pacific on the North Coast Limited passenger train.

The color and style of the dining car china was designed to mimic the 1953 Loewy passenger train paint scheme, that was designed by Raymond Loewy, a renowned designer who was hired by the NP to rebrand, redesign and refresh their image for the famous North Coast Limited passenger train.

Included is some original silverware and Napkins that would’ve been used with the pattern. We have setup a Breakfast, Dinner and a special Great Big Baked Potato special place setting.

$15 food is also served onsite. Teriyaki chicken and rice.
