Cheney Depot Society

Cheney Depot Society We are a group of people from the City Of Cheney intent on preserving the Northern Pacific Railroad Depot built in the Cheney, Washington in 1929

Our goal is to relocate and re-purpose the unique 1929 Spanish style Northern Pacific Railroad depot while preserving its historic features and story. The depot currently sits between live tracks on BNSF property. The company has declared the building surplus and it is slated for demolition. We organized to save this landmark in the City of Cheney which served as a gateway to the community and the

college for 90 years. This page serves to mark our progress and encourage participation in this endeavor.

Another cool visit to Cheney arrived tonight (5/14/2026).

EMD F7, SP&S 804 was built in 1953 for the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railway. Originally delivered in Pullman green and gold, later repainted in the Broad Stripe Scheme.

After the BN takeover in 1970 it was painted BN green and renumbered to 716. It was later used by various owners such as the Minnesota Zephyr as the MNZX 787.

It is on to new life at the Inland Northwest Rail Museum in Reardan, WA.

Another project completed! We had the parking lot striped. Thank you to EverLine Coatings and Service who did a fantastic job of getting the parking area stripped and painted. We still have quite a bit more to do to actually be finished, but bit by bit we're getting closer to total completion.

For those who missed it, today (5/7/2026) the “Abraham Lincoln” Private car passed through Cheney.

It was built in 1910 as Western Pacific 895, a Pullman Coach. In 1924 it became Denver and Rio Grande Western as the 926. Later rebuilt in 1929 as a private car for the railroads President. Numbered D&RGW 101.

Since 1964 the car has been in private hands, being sold to the current owners in 1983. It was then restored and named the “Abraham Lincoln”. It is currently the oldest Amtrak certified railcar in the country.

Keep on the lookout as this car will be back through Cheney soon on its way to its new location.
