Lori and RJ/Cotton Candy Express Music , longtime Pickleberry Pie performers, were visiting California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) when a magical moment happened, Lori recalls:
“CPMC has a beautiful new playroom. There was an Art Therapist (Jane) with a young woman, 17 years old, Camryn. We played a beautiful new song that RJ dreamt the night before. Lovely Camryn, who could only write on a small white board at that time, wrote that she loved the song. We continue and Cameron is in a state of total BLISS. Her eyes were closed and she was FEELING the music. As we are singing, Camryn and Jane are also doing art. They both said they were infusing it with our music. Camryn writes on her board for us to please play the first song again. Of course we do and it was beautiful and we left all feeling so warm and beyond fuzzy.
The next day the Child Life specialist called us and told us what a profound experience Camryn had. She also said that Camryn was dying and might not make it to the end of the month. Could we please record our song and send it? Of course we did!”

However, that’s not the end of the story. Because of this experience, Lori and RJ were asked to sing their song “We’re Made of Love” at a Pediatric Palliative Care Summit. Dr. Joan Fisher talked about Camryn’s response to the song and how important music is to kids in the hospital. She also said that Camryn was trying a new therapy and THEY WERE SENDING HER HOME! HOME!!! Dr. Fisher added, “Pickleberry Pie is awesome! They come and they not only sing for our children, they sing with our children, they inspire us, they help heal our kids and keep them smiling.”
The excellent news is that Camryn is doing much better! Lori and RJ have visited her multiple times at CPMC.

These are the magical musical moments that truly and deeply matter!

One of our performers Uncle Devin shared something with me that I haven't been able to stop thinking about.

He was performing at Kennedy Krieger in Baltimore when a young man was wheeled out on his bed to watch the show. He could only lay flat on his stomach.

He was the most active child there. Waving his arms. Singing like crazy. His energy filled the whole room.

"A beautiful reminder of why we bring music to children and their families. No matter your circumstance — enjoy life and make the best of any situation."

— "Uncle Devin" Walker, Pickleberry Pie performer

Children deserve to continue to have more of these opportunities for musical joy!

At Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, Omari Nyamweya has a job that most people never think about — and it changes everything.

Once a month, Pickleberry Pie performers arrive at the Panda Room studio. They set up microphones, tune their instruments, and get ready to play a live concert for the kids. And Omari makes sure no child on the floor misses it.

He runs the CCTV broadcast — sending the performance live into every patient room in the unit. Children who are too sick or too fragile to leave their beds still get the show. They still get Nanny Nikki on their TV screen, still get to hear live music, still get a few minutes that feel like something other than a hospital day.

"Pickleberry Pie has made a big impact on the family, staff, and especially patients at Lurie Children's Hospital. Once a month they provide top-notch live musical entertainment in our studio and CCTV. Performers like Nanny Nikki bring a smile and comfort to our patients. We love what Pickleberry Pie does — and so do our patients!"

— Omari Nyamweya, Panda Room/CCTV Technical Staff, Lurie Children's Hospital, Chicago, IL

Today is Day 5 of our Musical Moments that Matter campaign. We're raising $10,000 by Monday, May 18 — and a generous donor has put up a $3,000 matching fund, with $2,200 still available. Every dollar you give right now is doubled.

Lori and RJ/Cotton Candy Express Music believe music is so important because it can help lower blood pressure, reduce pain, improve mood, relieve stress, and help children notice and express their feelings. Therefore, they bring joy and relief to kids having a difficult time through their amazing performances with Pickleberry Pie. As evidenced here by Ricky from George Mark House Children's Hospice, in San Francisco, CA, the impact they have is a really special one.

Please help Lori & RJ and all the performers at Pickleberry Pie continue to bring this much needed joy and relief to children everywhere!

At University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Cleveland, OH in the community room, a little girl in a wagon with a caretaker was there for a Pickleberry Pie performance. The little girl was so engaged with the show that when David & Jenny from Two of a Kind asked for color suggestions in the song "Jenny Jenkins", she said "PURPLE" and beamed with pride and excitement. At the end of the show, her caretaker came up to us and said tearfully, "That's the first time I've heard her speak in two months!"
That's a musical moment that matters! You can help this work to continue to reach kids that need it most!

At Nationwide Children's Hospital, Pickleberry Pie performer Joanie Calem set up in the siblings' clubhouse and met Ryan — a little boy on the autism spectrum with speech apraxia. For 45 minutes straight, Ryan ran the show: playing ukulele alongside Joanie's guitar, calling out song requests, and deciding who else got to participate.

When Ryan's father arrived, he stood quietly watching, tears in his eyes. He told Joanie that very few people can understand Ryan when he speaks.

Joanie had understood him the whole time. That's a Musical Moment that Matters. 💛

Lanny Sherwin plays ukulele for a class of children with special needs in Santa Barbara. None of them can speak. Only two can walk.

For weeks, one little girl — we'll call her L. — was afraid of him. She'd stay inside while the others listened from plastic chairs just outside.

Then one day, she walked out on her own, sat down right in front of him, and asked for "Wheels on the Bus."

When the song ended, she took his hand with both of hers and held it over her heart.

He said he didn't breathe for about 10 seconds. "For those 10 seconds, there were just the two of us in the Universe."

This is what Pickleberry Pie does. And this week, we're raising $10,000 to make sure it keeps happening: givebutter.com/musical-moments-that-matter
