Last weekend Governor Maura Healey stopped by the City of Chelsea to celebrate the city's 4th All America City win and during her tour of the city she stopped by the Chelsea Housing Authority Mace site. During her visit she met with residents, CHA staff and resident leaders among others community leaders. While on site the Governor ran an impromptu basketball clinic with the local youth and visited a few residents to find out more about the concerns of Chelsea residents.

Special thanks to Darlene DeVita for the photos and documenting the visit.

This week the CHA team traveled to Framingham for the kick off of an EV Carshare pilot that includes the residents of the Chelsea Housing Authority. Working with MAPC, Alwayz, Beam Global and Zipcar CHA is hosting a Zipcar at our site for use by our residents at a discounted rate. Chelsea was among four communities chosen for this innovative program which is possible through a grant from Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. Our team also met with Alwayz and Zipcar employees to learn more about how the program works as we create an outreach plan focusing on transit equity. We will be hosting an official ribbon cutting event in August to celebrate the pilot.

We are all very excited for this transformative program. Many of our residents have licenses but do not have access to cars, and this is an innovative way to bridge that physical divide between places with limited transit options. Residents will be able to go shopping, take their children to appointments and visit family in a very eco-friendly and affordable way with this program!

Nothing says summer like good food, great company, and even better memories!

Last Wednesday, our Prattville/Fitzpatrick community came together for a fun afternoon of BBQ, laughter, and sunshine (with some torrential downpours in between).

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it a wonderful day. We love bringing our residents and staff together to create lasting memories!

This week our FSS Coordinator Carmen Torres celebrated one year of being cancer free. Carmen has survived multiple bouts with cancer and comes out stronger every time. Last year our team dedicated our Annual Report book to Carmen, the staff all wore pink CHA shirts to show support and Carmen was our featured employee. Despite her battle against cancer last year Carmen continued to work with residents on their hopes and dreams through the FSS program where she continued to show her residents love and support. We are lucky to have Carmen working with our residents and bringing joy to our staff and join her in celebrating.🩷🎗️

Today CHA Senior Staff met with HUD representatives to discuss our programs and future development. This was part of the first series of visits to the Northeast for the new General Deputy Assistant Secretary of HUD, Heidi Frechette. During the course of the meeting and tour of our Scrivano Federal Family site CHA Executive Director Paul Nowicki took the opportunity to highlight our widely acclaimed leased housing department , detailing how it not only services our own Section 8 vouchers but also vouchers for multiple other communities and for other local entities. The General Deputy Assistant Secretary and other HUD staff also commented positively on the extensive nature of our supportive services offerings, our self-sufficiency programs and the future development plans currently being envisioned. We are proud to be among one of the handful of Northeastern housing authorities chosen for her inagugeral visit and look forward to working with her team more as we look to the future!

With temperatures reaching over 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday we are encouraging our residents to use the resources available to them at their sites to stay cool. At our family sites our water features will be on until 8pm so kids have a safe place to cool off. At our Senior and Disabled sites at Margolis and Buckley we are encouraging our residents to utilize the community rooms to cool off. Both Buckley and Margolis were part of a major CDBG project we did in conjunction with the city to bring new air systems in that effectively cool both community rooms in the summer and keep them warm in the winter. At Margolis we worked on another major grant with the City of Chelsea last year to install a white roof over the top of the 13th floor, right above the community room, which helps massively reduce the temperature in that community room.

Both the air system projects through CDBG and the white roof project highlight our productive relationship with the City of Chelsea as we work to ensure our residents are safe, secure and healthy. It also shows how important grants are at public housing authorities as we work to upgrade our infrastructure at some sites and redevelop other sites. We encourage everyone to take it slow and hydrate!

We are proud to partner with Chelsea High School’s Post Graduate Program to provide students with meaningful, hands-on workplace experience at the Chelsea Housing Authority.

Through this internship opportunity, students gain valuable skills in communication, teamwork, responsibility, and professionalism while building confidence and preparing for future careers. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to learn have made them a wonderful addition to our team.

We are grateful for the opportunity to support these students on their journey and look forward to continuing this impactful partnership with Chelsea High School as we help empower the next generation of professionals.

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Josue Velez-Soto, Front Office Coordinator at the Chelsea Housing Authority.

At today’s Mother’s Day Block Party, Josue traded the front desk for the grill, serving up food, smiles, and the same dedication he brings to his work every day. Whether he’s helping residents in the office or cooking for neighbors at community events, Josue leads with heart and a true passion for service.

Thank you, Josue, for everything you do to make our community stronger and more connected.
