Mary O'Malley Park

Mary O'Malley Park Mary O’Malley Park, in historic Admiral’s Hill in Chelsea, is managed and maintained by the DCR. Mary died on April 11, 1978 at the age of 50. Thank you.

To schedule a special event at Mary O'Malley Park, please contact the Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) 617-626-1250. Mary O’Malley Park was dedicated in 1984 in memory of Mary O’Malley, a teacher and resident of the city of Chelsea. Among her many accomplishments, Mary chaired the Chelsea Naval Advisory Board, and served as a member and incorporator of the Chelsea Restoration C

ommittee. Mary was selected “Citizen of the Year” by the Chelsea Kiwanis Club. An engraved marker has been placed at the Park reading “Mary O’Malley Memorial Park” in her honor. As Commissioner William J. Geary noted at the Park dedication, “Mary’s diligence helped the Chelsea Naval Hospital Park become a reality.”

In 2024, Mary O’Malley Park will celebrate its 40th anniversary of dedication. Please share with us any memories or pictures you may have of the Park by Direct Messaging us, and we will share them on this page.

**A Big Thank You to Rick and Jesse!**

If you've visited Mary O'Malley Park recently, you may have noticed the beautiful new rock garden surrounding the park's memorial stone.

The Friends of Mary O'Malley Park were pleased to provide funding for the flowers, plants, and materials, but the real credit for bringing this project to life belongs to our wonderful DCR park caretakers, Rick and Jesse.

Rick and Jesse took the initiative to purchase the materials, transport them to the park, and then put in the hard work of planting the garden. Their dedication, pride in their work, and continued commitment to making Mary O'Malley Park a more beautiful place for everyone are greatly appreciated.

The next time you see Rick or Jesse working in the park, please take a moment to thank them for everything they do. Their efforts often happen behind the scenes, but they make a real difference in the appearance and enjoyment of one of Chelsea's most treasured public spaces.

On behalf of the Friends of Mary O'Malley Park and our entire community, thank you, Rick and Jesse, for helping keep our park beautiful.!

DCR’s Rick (pictured here) and Jesse are back once again this summer, caring for the grounds and facilities at Mary O’Malley State Park. Earlier this year, Rick also took the lead in installing the park’s new benches (see previous post below), helping make the waterfront and playground areas even more welcoming for visitors and families. Beyond keeping the park looking its best, Rick is also an amateur photographer who enjoys capturing images of the birds and wildlife that call the park home. If you see Rick or Jesse around the park this season, be sure to stop by and say hello - and thank them for all they do to help keep this special place beautiful for the community.

Coyote Sighting Advisory

A large male coyote was observed near the Admirals Hill pier a few evenings ago. This is not the first time coyotes have been seen in the area, as they continue to adapt and thrive in both suburban and urban environments.

Please take a few simple precautions to help keep our community and pets safe:

• Always keep pets on a leash and under supervision.
• Avoid leaving food, pet food, or trash outdoors.
• Never approach, feed, or attempt to interact with wildlife.

For more information on safely coexisting with coyotes, please visit:

If you observe aggressive behavior or feel unsafe, contact 9-1-1 immediately.

Thank you for helping keep our park and neighborhood safe for everyone. 🌳🐕
