This week marks the anniversary of the Titanic sinking.
In the early hours of April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic slipped beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic, taking more than 1,500 lives. More than a century later, we remember not just the tragedy, but the people—crew and passengers alike—and the courage, sacrifice, and humanity shown in those final hours.
At the Portland Seafarer Center, Seafarer’s Friend Welcome Center, we invite you to take a moment to reflect. As you enter, you’ll find a life vest from the original Titanic, wall lined with the names of every crew member onboard—both those who were lost and those who survived—and our “Life at Sea” photo exhibit, featuring images taken by seafarers themselves in 2025.
A powerful way to connect past and present—and to honor all who live and work at sea.
