SSA updated its database of U.S. votes at International Financial Institutions, demonstrating the federal government’s historical support for using U.S. taxpayer funds on projects that cause significant harm to American shrimpers (and other industries).

Takeaways: There were no new votes regarding shrimp aquaculture. However, for the second time in a year, U.S. Treasury representatives referenced long-ignored voting codes intended to oppose funding for projects meant to increase exports of certain commodities. Could there be a shift in their understanding of voting obligations?

Right below the sign is a cooler full of frozen shrimp, not from Louisiana waters but imported from Indonesia and Ecuador.

In 2024, SSA worked with the FTC to communicate to restaurants that it is a violation of federal law for restaurants to create an impression that they are offering wild-caught domestic shrimp when farmed, foreign shrimp is being served. SSA is funding cutting-edge genetic testing of shrimp served at a random selection of restaurants across the Gulf Coast and South Atlantic through SeaD Consulting.

This story highlights the deceptive practices of a restaurant claiming to serve fresh, local seafood when, in reality, it served farmed, frozen seafood imported from overseas. By using misleading imagery, phrases like “Eat local,” and décor to imply authenticity, the restaurant created a “net impression” that tricked customers, which is both unfair and illegal.

Businesses are reminded that implied claims through ads, menus, décor, or social media must be truthful. Misleading customers damages trust and competition. Consumers wanting to report Restaurants and seafood shops to ensure compliance or report similar deceptive practices should contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or their local consumer protection agency.

🚨 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗽 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 🚨

LDWF announces that portions of the fall inshore shrimp season will 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟲, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰.

Here’s what you need to know:
📍 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝟭 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲:
▪ From the western shoreline of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet westward to the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River.
▪ 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗘𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦: Areas like Lake Pontchartrain, Chef Menteur and Rigolets Passes, Biloxi Marsh, and Breton and Chandeleur Sounds (as defined by R.S. 56:495.1) remain open.

📍 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝟮 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲:
▪ From the eastern shore of South Pass of the Mississippi River westward to the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal.

📍 𝗭𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝟯 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲:
▪ From the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal westward to the Louisiana/Texas state line.

🌊 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
Remain 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 to sh*****ng until further notice.

Why the closure? Recent biological sampling shows smaller-than-allowed white shrimp sizes in large portions of inside waters. This closure protects these shrimp, allowing them to grow to larger, more valuable sizes.

LDWF will continue monitoring open areas and make adjustments as needed. Stay updated—notice of any changes will be provided at least 72 hours in advance.

📞 For more information, contact Peyton Cagle at (𝟯𝟯𝟳) 𝟰𝟵𝟭-𝟮𝟮𝟭𝟯 or [email protected].
