This News Blast features Amy Tyler and Renate Maile-Moskowitz —
two of our six instructors:

Spin Knit Nexus with Amy Tyler

In this exploration of the intersection of spinning and knitting, several spinning techniques will be covered for creating combinations of yarns that are not found among commercially spun yarns. Explore how to use those yarn combinations to
create unique knitting projects. Focus on spinning and combining yarns that are different but complementary by 1) blending fibers at the wheel; 2) combining solid color fiber sources in multiple ways; 3) spinning yarns of different thicknesses and textures from a single fiber source; and 4) spinning and plying hand-painted tops in a variety of ways. Experience Level: Should be able to spin a singles of reasonably consistent thickness and twist; have some experience creating 2-ply yarns; be comfortable with the knit stitch, the purl stitch, cast on, and bind off. Class Size Limit: 18.

Amy has degrees in modern dance, kinesiology, and physiology. Her art and science backgrounds give her a keen understanding of learning movement skills, composition, pattern recognition, and systematic exploration. The result is her focus on spinning and knitting technique, texture, three-dimensional structure, and knit designs that exploit handspinning techniques. She teaches spinning and knitting at venues across the country and is well known for her animated and engaging teaching style. Amy has published articles in Spin Off, Interweave Knits, and PLY Magazine. You can find out more about her work on her website: www.stonesockfibers.com

Feltrikiri – Texturing, Embellishing and Raising Felt into Unique 3D Creations with Renate Maile-Moskowitz

Feltrikiri is an underrated Finishing and Touch-Up Technique for all new and old felt surfaces, and applicable to all small and large Felt Projects. The Japanese word “Kiri” resonates in our vocabulary with the fear and trepidation felters encounter when administering the “first cut(s)” into one’s finished work. With a little hand holding for the first incisions into the felt, all will overcome and experience the thrill of unearthing hidden colors, unexpected undergrounds and layerings. Simultaneously see your 2D felt rise into another dimension by cutting, folding, twisting, and stretching your felt into endless new 3D shapes and textures. After an initial practice piece of a smaller brooch, participants will venture on to apply this technique to a larger project of their own choosing and design — the size and intricacy based upon their felting skills. Experience Level: Beginner to Experienced. Class Size Limit: 16.

Renate’s artistic background is multi-cultural, multi-disciplinary, versatile, and crosses many boundaries. German born, raised and self-trained in just about every textile tradition, the nearly forgotten techniques of felt making and silk/sericulture production became an early research and teaching pursuit. A Fulbright Scholarship in Dance brought her to the US where new venues surfaced to apply and fuse her experiences and interests in unique Fiber, Textile and Costume fields. Creating costumes for the Shakespeare Theater, the Washington National Opera under general director Placido Domingo’s artistic leadership, teaching Fiber Arts workshops nationally and internationally, creating performance art pieces, consulting with museums and colleges, collaborating with Discovery Channel, the Textile Museum and Smithsonian’s Educational Outreach Programs are just a few noteworthy applications. She concurrently creates her own work for galleries and shows, teaches, and publishes her findings and creations in magazines and books. www.instagram.com/renatemoskowitz and Renate Maile-Moskowitz

This News Blast features Janney Simpson and Rebecca Smith —
two of our six instructors:

Deflected Double Weave:
Connections, Layers and Pockets with Janney Simpson
Deflected Double Weave has regained popularity in the repertoires of contemporary weavers. Why is this structure appealing? How does it work? What else can we do with Deflected Double Weave? Several approaches to designing deflected double weave patterns as well as different tie-ups make it happen easily at the loom. It can also be combined with traditional double weave to create connections, layers, and pockets all in the same piece. This technique may be used to weave dramatic shawls, scarves, and cowls with a variety of fibers and colorways. A skeleton tie-up allows you to tie-up your loom just once for these exciting possibilities with Deflected Double Weave.
Experience Level: Intermediate – must be able to warp a loom, read and understand a draft. Class Size Limit: 16.

Janney Simpson previously taught weaving at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, CT and is currently teaching at The Barn in Ga***rd, MI. She relishes the “ah-ha” moment when new weavers throw a shuttle for the first time. Janney is a past President, Apprentice, and Weaver of Distinction of the Handweavers’ Guild of CT. Also a member of Complex Weavers and Japanese Textile Study Group, she enjoys sharing her interest in Sakiori weaving using vintage silk kimono. She has presented many workshops and lectures on Finishing and Embellishing Handwovens, Knitted Beaded Bags, Sakiori, Deflected Double Weave, and Weaving with Fibers of Micronesia. Janney strives to create one-of-a-kind pieces using a variety of fibers and weave structures on many types of looms. www.handwovenmagazine.com

Free Form Tapestry with Rebecca Smith
Rebecca’s personal style of tapestry weaving incorporates seed beads and wire to make freestanding tapestries that undulate and capture light in unique ways. In this workshop you will learn her technique for free form weaving and be able to create your own small tapestry. Experience Level: Participants should be familiar with the basic concept of weft-faced weaving. Class Size Limit: 20.
Rebecca Smith is an award-winning tapestry weaver. She wrote the book (literally!) on weaving with yarn and beads together, which is her own original technique. Rebecca has exhibited widely and won multiple awards. Her unique style of tapestry weaving was featured in the Fall 2019 issue of Fiber Art Now magazine. www.rebeccasmithtapestry.com

The Handweavers Guild of America, Inc.'s (HGA) https://www.facebook.com/HandweaversGuildofAmerica/ interview series, Textiles & Tea, takes place every Tuesday at 4 PM (ET). Liz Spear, an instructor for EGLFC 2023 will be speaking on March 7, 2023.

Liz Spear has been working with her hands since 1978, and has been a full-time craftsman in Western North Carolina since ’95. She is primarily a weaver of cloth and a maker of fine garments and accessories, as well as a line of exhibition-worthy coats, incorporating other fiber artists’ cloth and colors. For several years, Liz has also been making nuno-felt yardage with silk fabrics dyed and/or printed by others. This nuno-felt collage fabric is cut up and combined with the handwoven fabrics. Teaching and demonstrating for craft schools and organizations are important parts of her continuing to master her craft. She conducts workshops in both nuno-felting and Sewing Your Handmade Fabrics with a concentration on garment design and sewing. Liz is a member of several fine craft guilds and has taught at Penland and Arrowmont Schools of Craft, John C. Campbell Folk School, and Appalachian Center for Craft, as well as presenting workshops for weaving and fiber guilds across the country.
