CYC Junior Division

is a non-profit sailing instruction program. “Junior Division” was originally established in the 1930’s as a program to educate youth in the sport of sailing and swimming at the Crescent Yacht Club. Since this time, Junior Division has run a summer day “camp” for youth between the ages of 7 and 16. Recently the program has expanded to include young sailors starting at the age of 4 and offering a

dult sailing lesson and sailing programs for families. The new facilities were completed for the 2020 Season but due the Covid-19 the program did not run. The 2021 Season was the first summer in our new home! From the early days of running a bus to Watertown to pick up the youth, to the 90’s, when carpools of Caravans pull up daily to unload groups of children, a few things have remained constant. This would include the incredible dedication and commitment of a number of various volunteers who graciously give their time to serve on the Board of Directors. Another constant for this program is the outstanding financial and “in kind” support from club members as well as the community for various expenses, but primarily to purchase safe, reliable, and durable sailboats and chase boats for the program. The program remains fortunate to be able to attract and retain exceptional staff many of whom attended the program themselves. One tradition that has continued over the past 70 years is the ritual of the “Awards Night” or, as it was previously known, the “Labor Day Tea.” During this event all of the participants in the program are individually recognized. The sense of pride and accomplishment are obvious. Junior Division has “graduated” thousands of youth who have, through their experience in the program, found a life long love for the sport of sailing and a healthy respect and understanding of safety on the water. Bonds of friendship are born as well. Ask any former participant and they will surely smile as they reminisce!! Presently, Junior Division runs continuous instruction from late June through mid August. Day Program Participants may register for a full Summer (7 weeks or One Session (1/2 summer programs). The “juniors” (7-11 years old) come 9am – 4pm Mondays and Tuesdays, the “seniors” (12-16 years old) attend on Wednesday & Thursdays . The two groups attend 1 Fun Friday a session! Sailing instructors are certified through US SAILING, and the lifeguards and swim instructors are certified through THE RED CROSS. Participants are encouraged to register on line as soon as possible as there are limited spaces available All children are welcome and you are not required to be members of the Crescent Yacht Club in order to enroll your child.
