Today, August 28, is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, a special day to remember the pet companions we've lost over the years. Deborah Barnes, author and writer, founded Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day in honor of her cat, Mr. Jazz.

The death of a pet carries its own type of grief. Pets are a part of our family - loving and faithful companions. As a pet lover, you may have experienced this type of loss. The Alice Fund understands loss and how important it is to remember our feline friends who have crossed the rainbow bridge.

The mission of The Alice Fund is to help provide medical care and supplies to cats whose owners and caregivers would otherwise lack the resources to access such care. By accepting donations from generous animal lovers like you, The Alice Fund gives contributors a way to extend their love for cats to those in need.

For more than 12 years, Strohler was the official greeter at Flowers by Gil and Curt. He was a beloved companion and he loved his life. Sadly, Strohler passed away in July 2019 from an apparent stroke. 🐾 Kitten Season is Here… and Here’s the Hard Truth 🐾

We know how it feels. You see tiny kittens all alone and your first instinct is to scoop them up and help. 💔

But in most cases… the best thing you can do is nothing at all.

Kittens have their highest chance of survival when they stay with their mom. She knows how to feed them, keep them warm, and protect them. Even if you don’t see her, she is very likely nearby—out searching for food and will return.

As hard as it is, sometimes helping means stepping back.

👀 So how do you know what to do? Hopefully our Flow Chart will help!

Take a moment and assess from a distance:

✅ Kittens are clean and dry
✅ They’re tucked in a relatively safe spot

👉 Leave them be.
Keep an eye from afar and reach out to your local shelter or rescue for guidance if needed.

🐾 Still not sure? Sprinkle a ring of flour around the nest, and check back several hours later. If mom has come and gone you will see footsteps in the flour : )

🚨 When should you step in?

If the kittens are:
❌ Covered in dirt, waste, or appear weak
❌ In immediate danger (near a road, predators, unsafe area)

Then it’s okay to intervene.

Place them in a box with a soft towel or blanket and provide warmth immediately (heating pad or a warm rice sock).

⚠️ Warmth is critical.
Cold kittens cannot survive, and they should NEVER be fed until fully warmed.

📌 A few important tips:

🚫 No cow’s milk — kitten formula only
🚫 Do not move kittens unless they truly need help
🚫 Bottle feeding can be dangerous if done incorrectly—research first (The Kitten Lady is a great resource!)

💬 When in doubt, ask for help before acting.

🐾 The takeaway?
The best place for kittens is with their mom—even if you can’t see her right away.

Every year, kitten season feels like it gets worse and worse. We dread to see how many times a day we, along with the other handful of volunteer groups, are tagged on Facebook and mentioned on the Nextdoor App for help.

We only have a handful of foster homes because our primary focus is TNR. Those foster homes are always full, mostly now with shy cats or cats with health issues from last year that are still waiting to be adopted.

We are tired of seeing so many kittens being given away online without being spayed or neutered first. Most local shelters will provide supplies and veterinary care if you're willing to foster the litter. There are also local resources available to help get the mom and dad cats fixed for free or at very low-cost.

Please do your research to learn about our local resources before just giving away kittens without any veterinary care. And please support your local shelters and volunteer organizations. We are tired of picking up the pieces.

Reminder that McKamey Animal Center's Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program is open to Hamilton County, TN residents! 🐱

Pricing:
1 cat — $35 🐈
2 cats — $60 🐈🐈‍⬛

Includes:
✔ Spay/neuter surgery
✔ Rabies vaccine
✔ Ear tip (to show the cat has been fixed)

📅 When: Wednesdays
⏰ Drop-off: Arrive a little before 8 a.m.
📌 Pickup: Same day between 3–4 p.m.

No appointment needed. Cats must arrive in humane traps. Traps are available through McKamey for a small usage fee and refundable deposit.
