Bike Walk Chattanooga

Bike Walk Chattanooga Bike Walk Chattanooga is a bike and pedestrian advocacy group in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

We are a local chapter of our statewide bike and pedestrian advocacy group, Bike Walk Tennessee. Our goal is to serve as an umbrella organization advocating for all modes of sustainable transportation, whether you’re a performance bicyclist, a runner or walker for recreation, or you ride a bike or walk as your main mode of transportation, we could use your support. We all share the same roads and we all want the same thing: Safer Streets and Better Planned Infrastructure for Biking and Walking.

Spotted in the wild: This colorful example of community collaboration and tactical urbanism along Citico Avenue between Carver Park and Community Haven. It was an unexpected find in our travels yesterday, and a story that deserves celebrating.

Through a partnership between UTC’s Honors Innovation Lab and the City of Chattanooga’s Department of Public Works, new ADA-accessible ramps and a midblock crosswalk were added, striping for the bike lane was refreshed and bollards were installed. Finally, artful touches were added in the bulbouts to bring a splash of color out into the streets, right where youth, families and older adults cross between these wonderful community assets. A UTC blog post indicates these multifaceted and multigenerational improvements improved walkability by 30%!

It turns out this was part of a bigger partnership with many others at the table working to improve community connections and multigenerational engagement. More details in our story.

More of this - we love it!

Major credit to these players:

(Note: we were not involved but really want to celebrate good news when we find it.)

If you’re headed to Velo Coffee tomorrow for Bike to Work Day, you’ll likely use Main Street on some part of your journey. Here are some things you should know as you ride.

Sometime in the coming months, TDOT will be paving Main Street from Broad Street to Dodds Avenue. Plans were put in place months ago and approved by TDOT in late March. There’s a lot of good in it, from a road diet that benefits pedestrians with an ability for more crosswalks to a center lane that removes turning conflicts for drivers. There’s some really good bicycle connectivity to celebrate at Central Ave where Main Street travel under the railroad as well. Safer streets, right?

But then, there’s the other thing. The other thing is the removal of an existing bike lane to create wider lanes for cars right where multimodal connectivity and safety conditions matter.

We have concerns. You may as well. Please let us know what you think as we prepare for next steps.

The storms earlier this week may have stopped the Wednesday ride and roll, but - WHOA - didn’t expect this! ⚡️ The Normal Park Lightning ⚡️ really showed up this morning! Kids and parents stormed the streets with wheels representing both the Upper and Lower Schools! We had bikes. We had scooters. And yes, we even had skates.

We had a great time with and ! Huge thanks to the transportation planners from who helped lead and sweep today’s ride!

Every day should be a ride, roll and walking kind of day.
