ImprovingBirth.org - Chattanooga, TN We are mothers and the people who care for us. Our mission is to bring evidence-based care and humanity to childbirth. www.ImprovingBirth.org medicated birth.

There’s a big problem with American maternity care when one in three babies is born by surgery, 98% of women do not receive care based on best medical evidence, and a woman’s chance of dying in childbirth is higher here than in 48 other developed countries. ~

This movement isn’t about natural birth vs. It’s not about hospital birth vs. homebirth or birth center birth. It’s about women being capa

ble of making safer, more informed decisions about their care and that of their babies, when they are given full and accurate information about their care options, including the potential harms, benefits, and alternatives. It’s about respect for women and their decisions in childbirth, including how, where, and with whom they give birth; and the right to be treated with dignity and compassion. Who We Are:
Our mission is to bring evidence-based care and humanity to childbirth--starting with the consumer. Evidence-based care is based on the highest quality, most current medical evidence, tailored to the individual. We believe that women can make safer, more informed decisions about their care and that of their babies when they are given full and accurate information about their care options, including the potential harms, benefits, and alternatives. Humanity in childbirth means respect of the birthing woman, of her autonomy, and of her fundamental right to make decisions about her body and her baby. We believe that childbearing women, like all human beings, should be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. More about Who We Are: http://www.improvingbirth.org/who-we-are/

What We Do:
Right now, we're raising awareness about the crisis in American maternity care by going straight to the consumer to educate, inform, and provide opportunities for advocacy. Nearly 10,000 women, families, and birth professionals in over 100 cities in 46 states came out for our 2012 Labor Day rallies, raising awareness about the need for better, more respectful, evidence-based maternity care. In 2013, we expect to double those numbers, and we will go global with our cause. We also hand-delivered information about evidence-based care to over 2,000 doctors, nurses, and midwives in November 2012. We are working on educational programs for high-school and college-age young women and providers-to-be, a legal advocacy program for mothers, and a national platform to establish the fundamental human right of women to choose how and where they give birth. Going to a physical therapist (PT) after pregnancy and childbirth isn’t standardized care in America, but it absolutely should be.I sat down with three therapists at Body Connect Health & Wellness (where I get treatment) to learn more about why every mom should check in with a pelvic PT at

An estimated 700 to 900 women die in the U.S. every year from pregnancy- and childbirth-related causes. Another 65,000 nearly die, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rates are highest among black mothers and women in rural areas. A recent CDC Foundation analysis of data from four states found that close to 60 percent of maternal deaths were preventable.

A nationwide survey shows that postpartum nurses often fail to warn mothers about potentially life-threatening complications following childbirth, mainly because they need more education themselves.

What if we stopped telling women to push when they’re in labor? That’s the philosophy behind a new program at a U.K. hospital, and the results are amazing.

THIS IS IT! THE BABY HAS ARRIVED!
(**Insert party horns blowing, confetti flying in the air and throw a few fireworks in for good measure!)

The new website is up and just waiting for you to explore it.

This has been the most challenging year I’ve experienced so far since establishing ImprovingBirth nearly 6 years ago.

Transition, whether in birth or everyday life, is rarely easy.

I’m so proud of the website, but let’s be honest, the website is just a vehicle to get where we want to go, which is safer birth for all.

ImprovingBirth has done an incredible job over the past 5.5 years of raising awareness, but it’s time to do more and the only way to do that was to make a major shift.

By joining forces this year with the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services and BirthNetwork National, we’ve done just that.

We are committed to giving consumers, community leaders, and providers powerful tools that inform, support, engage, and empower them and those they serve to create safer birth for all.

We all know the statistics, but this isn’t about the statistics.

It’s about the people left emotionally affected by care practices that are deeply embedded, yet severely outdated.

It’s about you and me working together to say, "ENOUGH!"

Birth can and should be better, and we’ve got the tools to fix it!

So, come for a spin and check out the new site. Let me know what you think. Click here to visit the new site: http://improvingbirth.org .

What you don't know about postpartum preeclampsia could kill you.

We've heard from 3,100 women who survived life-threatening complications of pregnancy or childbirth. They told us what they wished they had known and what they would say to new and expectant mothers.
