Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African American students, was organized at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, on December 4, 1906. The year after the founding, Beta Chapter was founded at Howard University in 1907. During the fall of 1925, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a group of prominent African American Professional men, met a

t the home of Dr. Edel L. McIntosh, Sr., who was a graduate of Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. They were interested in establishing an graduate chapter in Chattanooga. Contact was made with the National Office and they were advised to make contact with Bro. Charles Green, who was the Southern Regional Director. Green was a Morehouse College graduate, class of 1920 and was a member of Eta Lambda Chapter, Atlanta. Since there were only two Alumni members of Alpha in the city, and seven members were needed in order to establish a chapter, Brothers from Atlanta came to Chattanooga and established Psi Lambda on April 16, 1926.
