🔐 Protect your information this Cybersecurity Awareness Month!

As technology becomes a bigger part of our everyday lives, taking simple steps to protect your personal and financial information is more important than ever.

In her recent article, BBB President, Michele Mason, recommends:
• Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager
• Turn on multifactor authentication whenever possible
• Keep your devices, apps and antivirus software updated
• Secure your home Wi-Fi and router
• Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi and USB charging stations
• Stay alert for data breaches and other signs of suspicious activity

Businesses should also regularly review their cybersecurity practices, train employees to spot potential threats and have a plan in place for responding to cyber incidents.

🌧️ A little rain didn’t stop our community from showing up!

Despite the rainy weather, 548 cars came through our Fall Shred Day on Saturday! While we wait for the final numbers, River City Shredding estimates that approximately 24,000 pounds of paper was shredded. That’s a lot of sensitive information kept out of the wrong hands! 🔒

And the impact didn’t stop there! Resource 1 Tier 3 Data Security collected hard drives and electronics for recycling, while the Hamilton County Coalition collected several bins of unneeded medications for safe disposal.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers, sponsors, and staff who helped make this event possible. And, of course, thank you to everyone who braved the rain to securely dispose of documents, electronics, and medications and help protect our community! 💙

We appreciate everyone who came out and helped make our Fall Shred Day a success!

🗓️ Protect Your Identity at BBB’s Shred Day! Rain or shine! 🌦️

Better Business Bureau is proud to host its Fall Shred Day on Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company (2111 W. Shepherd Rd, just off Hwy 153, Airport Exit 1A).

This free community event is designed for residential shredding and offers document shredding, electronics recycling, and a safe drug take-back in partnership with local organizations. Attendees can bring up to three large trash bags of personal documents to shred, and Resource 1 Tier 3 Data Security will securely destroy up to four PC hard drives per person. Resource 1 Tier 3 Data Security will also accept computers, laptops, and flat screen monitors for recycling.

In addition, the Hamilton County Coalition will provide proper disposal of unused or unwanted medications. If possible, please bring medications in their original containers with personal information crossed out.
Important note: Shredding will end earlier if the trucks fill up, so plan to arrive early.

Join your BBB and community partners in taking proactive steps to safeguard your identity and protect the environment!

Food insecurity can affect our neighbors in ways we may not always see. From families struggling to make ends meet to seniors choosing between groceries and other necessities, food banks and pantries play an important role in supporting communities.

As demand for these services continues, consider how you can help. Donating food or funds, volunteering your time, or supporting a trusted local organization can make a meaningful difference.

Before giving, BBB recommends doing your research to make sure your donation reaches a trustworthy organization. Visit Give.org to explore BBB Accredited Charities and learn more about organizations addressing food insecurity.

🚨 Received a “FINAL NOTICE” about your home warranty? Don’t panic.

Michele Mason, president of BBB Serving Southeast Tennessee & Northwest Georgia, recently shared a warning about deceptive home warranty mailings that may look like official notices from your mortgage company.

These letters often use urgent language, deadlines and even your mortgage company’s name to make the offer seem legitimate. But a closer look can reveal important red flags.

🔎 Go to the source. Contact your mortgage lender directly using information from your mortgage statement or the lender’s official website.

⚠️ Watch for pressure tactics. Don’t let threats or urgent deadlines push you into making a quick decision.

🔐 Protect your financial information. Never provide your bank or credit card information in response to an unexpected letter or call.

💵 Be cautious with unexpected checks. A check included with a home warranty offer may not be what it seems.

🏠 Considering a home warranty? Research the company and carefully review the terms before signing up.

Read Michele’s full article for more tips on spotting these deceptive mailings and protecting yourself from home warranty scams: https://www.timesfreepress.com/news/2026/sep/19/bbb-warns-be-on-the-lookout-for-fake-home/

📄 And mark your calendar for BBB’s Fall Shred Day on Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Chattanooga. Bring up to three large bags of personal documents for free shredding, along with eligible electronics and medications for recycling and safe disposal.
